POST 2Original post

Whatever the posted speed limit is. Yeah thats it. The speed limit...

POST 4Original post

Yes sir that's correct. I was doing the speed limit.

POST 5Original post

I got up to 145mph in mine once. I don't have an aerokit so it felt a bit like I was going to be taking off in a plane but still surprisingly very stable. I'm sure with a wing on the back it'd be even more so.

POST 6 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

I posted this question because I have only had myC4S for 3 weeks now - and the other day I got it up to 105mph - and it felt as if I was doing 65mph in my daily driver. My co-pilot at the time was my wife - and she even said how smooth the ride was at that speed. She also told me that if I ever go that fast again, she is going to report me to the State Police...I had to remind her that I have titled the car in her name !!!

POST 7Original post

Around 85-90 max here in Maryland, sadly not many places to open her up in the DC area.

POST 8Original post

About 120 with the top down on some single lane backroads at night, pretty fun. Didn't want to go much faster than that and get into 5th.

POST 9Original post

Quotes source post: 12868567

You're just not trying hard Or. Uh. Um.. So I've been told since I always follow the posted speed limit. Yeah. Speed limit... Oh wait. You mean you don't want to do 100+ mph wheelies down 495 while weaving in and out of traffic like the boys in PG county do?

POST 10Original post

150 - pretty much at redline in fifth. I was too much of a pu**y to grab for sixth. After less than a minute at 150, my water pump shaft seal blew...the car is working mighty hard at those speeds. For what it's worth to those of you with aerokit cars - with the wing at neutral rake, the rear lifted briefly at 130 when I went over a slight rise. After soiling myself and installing 8-degree wing shims, I can report that over the same stretch of desert (same rise) at higher speeds the car was much more solidly stuck to the ground. I can also report that the moment when the rear tires lose contact - and the tach briefly pops up to the rev limit - there is an impossibly short but seemingly eternal processing delay while your mind figures out what the hell just happened. That moment is about 99.98% terrifying and .02% exhilarating.

POST 12Original post

The beauty of Texas speed limits (and I've only lived here about 18 months - from Northern Virginia, so I empathize) is that they are absurdly fast. 100 on the way to work - by accident - is a regular occur...er, I mean happens occasionally. There is a beautifully maintained, flat, smooth toll road - where the speed limit is 85 - 1.2 miles from my house. I accidentally did 115 on it a couple of weeks ago. I feel so guilty... R

POST 13Original post

Quotes source post: 12868555

Yes, the C4S feels like it's on rails above 100mph, I actually think that's the sweet spot on sitting down and showing you that you bought a GREAT car !Once you brake 120 there is your ah ha moment and your smiling all day .

POST 14Original post

Quotes source post: 12868710

Curiously, the opposite effect happens - things clench. Tightly.

POST 15Original post

My lowly C2 cruises really nicely at 100, while still handles a curvy highway without getting light. Now if it had an aero kit and lower suspension I'm sure it would feel even a bit more solid. I'm still wavering on if I want to go that route.

POST 17Original post

The problem here in the US is that you actually feel like going fast is really special. I'm in Germany several times a year, and I'm routinely going 100+mph on the autobahn in rental cars not half as fast as a 911. The roads of course are much better, but once you get used to it, 100 mph is really no big deal.

POST 18Original post

225 km/h on the back straight at the track. That's 140 mph for you all.

POST 19Original post

145 down the straight at Roebling Road heading into the braking zone for turn 1.

POST 21Original post

140 by the speedo at Auto Club Speedway. Nothing evil at all at that speed.... Completely confident.

POST 23Original post

My highest was in a Benz limo last year from Frankfurt to Darmstadt on the Autobahn. Most straight section of the road, got up to 250kph which was a ball, sadly not in my own P car.

POST 24Original post

150 ish in my po on the pa turnpike......downhill. 171 on 195 in nj in my z06....uphill . the corvette had more to go the po was about done

POST 25Original post

I used to max out all of my cars 'just to see'... now as I've gotten older and my cars have gotten faster, I don't really even care anymore. Too much at stake I guess. So for me 110 is about the fastest in the 996. Did 172 on a CBR1000, 161 on a ZX6, 162 in a 944 turbo (passenger), 145 in S60R, 135 in FC RX7, and various other ricerburners in the low 100's.

POST 26Original post

160 at the ring in a friends 996 . Not going to try that on the street in mine .

POST 28Original post

I hit 130 once on my drive back home the day I bought it. Since then, a few times quickly to 100-110. After the aero kit and RoW M030, very stable at higher speeds.

POST 29Original post

140mph on the banked front stretch at TPWS. No more than 100mph on the hwy, and then only for a bit to get around a truck train on I35.

POST 30Original post

POST 31Original post

My own 996TT@295-300kph (just glanced briefly). 8am in a deserted highway in my country. In the track, 260kph in one, 280 in another, both also in my country.

POST 32Original post

When I get the Keyhole exit right, I can just touch 140 at the end of the back straight at Mid-Ohio. Do it only at the track.........

POST 33Original post

130 (indicated) on cruise control on the autobahn

POST 34Original post

150mph PA Turnpike in 6th. Steady as a rock and lots left in the engine. Just the one time. I have no doubt mine would do 170mph but not when I am driving.

POST 36Original post

So far 0 MPH but I plan on going really fast.

POST 37Original post

On my madien drive home from Nevada, got to something like 147 indicated.....was coming up on traffic so backed off.

POST 38Original post

130-ish and it was pretty "floaty" I've done 185 or so on a bike and it seemed somehow more stable

POST 39Original post

5 mph during my quarterly out and then quickly back in garage run. The excitement of it was almost too much, but alas I quickly realized I almost put 10 miles on the odometer. I then proceeded to do Fluid change, new brake pads, and disinfect the interior.

POST 41Original post

146 on a new runway that I was working on at the time... fifth gear almost at the red line... front was a little light... overall the car was planted...

POST 42Original post

165 on day one of ownership. Back roads in TX are great. Car felt like it was going much slower. After that I realized just how much fun/trouble this car was and then laughed out when it actually sunk in that this was my car.

Beautiful car, Man!!

POST 44Original post

I refuse to answer, on the grounds that I may incinerate myself.

POST 45Original post

dgmark, Your car looks great! Is that a factory aero kit? If so, where did you get the front splitter? Thanks

POST 46Original post

Quotes source post: 12872620

Yes it is a factory aero kit. I used a 996.2 GT3 cup splitter, the contours do not match perfectly on the ends but it fits well enough for a race car and they are not that expensive. As I have not driven the car yet, it is a fresh build. I do not know how it will balance out with the Aero tail base as opposed to a proper wing. As per class rules I will have to remove the upper blade on the tail base during a race, this will most likely necessitate removal of the front splitter to get the rear to settle at higher speeds. My 86 911 hates a splitter on the front.

POST 47Original post

Quotes source post: 12868892

I'm not as impressed by that as I am how fast you must have taken turn 10 (or is it 9?), leading onto the front straight. You don't hit 145 in a 996 unless you take that last turn like a boss. I hit 130-135 in my gutted, track prepped 986 S, and that requires about 100 mph through that last turn. I guess I could go a bit faster but don't have as much seat time at RR as compared to my main track, Sebring Raceway. BTW, I did equal your 145 in the Boxster S, but needed the banking of Daytona to do it. The massive rear wing slows me down in straight line speed. :-)

POST 48Original post

Topped out 5th on a country road with no side roads entering, 155 indicated, but I believe my speedo reads 5mph fast. Same road on my bikes I had seen 185. ETA: Car was perfectly stable.

POST 49Original post

Quotes source post: 12872370

You couldn't have been going that fast to catch yourself on fire.

POST 50Original post

141 on the banking at Daytona. Had a 300 pound passenger. Bone stock, street tires.

POST 51Original post

These kind of threads are always interesting. They show who pushes their car to the limits responsibly and (relatively) safely on the track, and who takes a different approach.

POST 52Original post

146 coming into the bus stop at WGI, 174 on a long straight stretch of highway at around 3:00 am when I first got the car.....

POST 53Original post

137 on the 91 here in L.A. early morning, extra light traffic. It was more of an oops as I was enjoying the sound of the engine and just kept shifting gears. 99' C2 (bone stock).

POST 54Original post

110.... But have only had it for less than a month.

POST 55Original post

130 . 5am. Empty highway. Had it for 2 weeks. Backed off because front end started feeling floaty

POST 56 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

32 responders so far - average "highest" speed 136

POST 57Original post

Quotes source post: 12878687

I think it's more interesting to see how may respondents exercise their car responsibly, i.e. on the track, and who does so irresponsibly on public roads: Track: 7 Public Road: 25 Not stated or N/A: 20

POST 59Original post

Quotes source post: 12878867

Not trying to turn this into a pissing match, but you are trying to tell me you have followed every single speed limit sign, speed recommended and road regulation since you have gotten your drivers license?

POST 60Original post

Quotes source post: 12879036

I think he is referring to some of the specific speeds mentioned on public roads in this thread rather than speeding in general. 5 over in a 55 is a world of difference than 100+ over in what is likely a 45 zone at best.

POST 61Original post

I guarantee that at some point in his life, David993 has seen triple digits on a public road

POST 62Original post

Quotes source post: 12879036

Starting a pissing match is exactly what you out-of-context question is designed to do. To answer your question, of course I haven't, just like everyone else here. But I'm older now and hopefully wiser. I am simply saying opinion is that driving at triple digit speeds on a public road is dangerous and irresponsible, even on a "deserted" road at 3am. At those speeds things can go wrong in an instant and when they do, the consequences go up exponentially. I'm sure even you would agree there's a big difference between driving 5 or 10 mph over the speed limit, and driving at 120, 130 or more. But you would also agree that there are conditions where 10 mph over the posted limit can be too fast. With nearly 20 years of SCCA racing under my belt (now retired from racing....actual racing not DE's) I apparently have a different perspective than most on the board, and perhaps I have a little more insight as to what can happen at those kind of speeds. Like I said, things can go wrong in an instant even on a race track with controlled conditions, a relatively safe environment, and other skilled drivers around you. On a public road you have zero control over the environment and conditions around you. Lastly, if one wants to drive at those speeds, go to a track day or DE. You'll be supporting your local PCA region or other organization that puts on these events and have way more fun than driving at dangerous speeds on public roads. I would think if one can afford a Porsche, one could afford a few hundred dollars to go to a DE. Cheers.

POST 67Original post

I can honestly say that I have a hard time keeping my car below 90 on the HW... She just wants to stretch her legs!

POST 68Original post

We are having this same conversation over in the Turbo forum. In summary, a new member just bought a pristine, 6,800 mile 996tt - beautiful car. Some of us said "take that thing to the track and exercise it." Others said "it's too nice to take to a track - it's a street car and you don't want to abuse it, just use it for spirited driving on the street." Valid points on both sides. But, the point was made that to drive the car as it was meant to be driven, you really should take it to a track for safety's sake. All of us are guilty of driving over the speed limit. As Geico says in their commercials "It's what we do." But I think all of us are also aware that it's not the smartest thing to do to drive really fast on public roads - we are putting others in danger. So, will I occasionally take it up to 100+ mph on a truly empty highway (no other cars within half a mile of me) for a few seconds or have some fun on an empty on/off ramp? Yes, knowing myself, I would be lying to say otherwise. But, if I want to do a fair amount of significantly-above-legal-limit driving, I'll save it for an off-public-road event. That doesn't mean I'll flog it to within an inch of it's limits (I'm simply not an experienced or talented enough driver to do that anyway) or tear the car up.

POST 69Original post

Yeah, I have a really big margin built into anytime I run the car up to X > 90 speeds. If I want to be an idiot and do idiotic things, that's on me, but I'm not taking anyone with me. I've had one guy tell me he knew I was too big a ***** to keep up with him. You are correct sir, I am too big a ***** to weave through traffic in order to travel 100 mph+. I'm too big a ***** to do that when there's any traffic. Or something. Also, I'd rather run one lap on track then spend the next 5 hours on an empty highway. Highways don't have interesting turns or safety crews.

POST 70Original post

Quotes source post: 12879374

Incorrect. I didnt mean to start a pissing match with my "out of context question" My point lays in the fact that I have seen people die in accidents doing 5 miles over the speed limit and people walk away from accidents doing 120. I get your point, and you are correct. Speeding on a public road is not the most advisable or politcally correct thing you can do. But most of the respondents that have admitted to it( myself included) have said themselves, Empty highway. For me, that meant no cars other than myself. At that point, I'll take my chances, and not before that. Besides, I see way more individuals talking on their phones doing 90 when I'm doing 10 above the speed limit. And to tell you the truth, the lady in the Suburban on her phone doing 90 scares me more than me doing 130. Have a wonderful day.

Dude! 85MPH speed limit? Wow! I'm moving to Texas!

POST 74Original post

Usually I'm focusing more on consistent turn entry and exit so I haven't really been keeping track. That and traffic on the straights usually prevents all out during DEs. Straight at Pacific Raceways, WA: 145~ mph Straight at The Ridge, WA: 145~ mph At these speeds or greater requires some serious braking, tires and downforce entering turn 1. A Day at Pacific - 930 Turbo A Day at the Ridge - 996 C4S

POST 75Original post

Well, mine has t seem triple digits yet since I got her a couple of months ago...but that's only because I've been on public roads only. Hoping for a track/DE day soon. I also keep asking to use 12R at KSAT but they haven't let me yet!
