if it behaves normally once unplugged, your DME is not getting the intended signal from the oil temp sensor to stop assisting idle with the IACV (Note: replacing the sensor requires the engine to be at least dropped - the sensor installs from the top and is nearly a foot long!) there will likely also be the 'ghost' of a code you need to kill as well...

Hi All, My wife was driving to pick me up from the station today (not our local one, double the distance (#TrainStrikes) and called to say the car was making very odd noises (which I could hear on the phone), sort of surging and revving manically. She said the rev gage was moving when stationary, the oil gauge etc so some sort of electric fault (it has oil in it). Anyone know what to look for, a brief google mentioned cracks in the air vacuum pipe (plastic I think) etc now these cars are 25 years old, any ideas? It stopped and we drove home fine! Cheers

If its a '98 cable throttle car the main candidates are typically - idle air control value - dirty MAF (notice you have an oiled filter) - EGR valve - vacuum lines/fittings - signal from the oil level/temp gauge > DME - Inspect the IACV and fittings, clean up, etc - some argue can be cleaned, some replace from a trusted source - EGR valve 'stutters' fuel tank vapour into the intake/throttle body - can't really be cleaned, would be a case of replacement (not hugely difficult or expensive) - inspect of essentially set out to blindly replace like-for-like everything you can get to (cheap at least) - this could drive you almost to distraction - to test get the car really truly up to temp then disconnect the electrical fitting/plug from the IACV valve, drive the car in traffic.... if it behaves normally once unplugged, your DME is not getting the intended signal from the oil temp sensor to stop assisting idle with the IACV (Note: replacing the sensor requires the engine to be at least dropped - the sensor installs from the top and is nearly a foot long!) there will likely also be the 'ghost' of a code you need to kill as well...
