Coverage and how to read this overview

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

8 eligible posts · 0 unverified posts · 1 discussions match the subject in their title or opening post.

POST 1Original post

My cayman is at around 2500 miles and sometimes, when i get out of the car i can slightly smell burning plastic from around the read tires, even when i dont do any fast/high rpm driving (no smell from the front). At this point, i should mention that i've been driving stick all my life and that i'm very comfortable with it, so i highly doubt that its me killing the clutch... When i asked the dealer, he said that this kind of smell comes from most caymans because of some sort of coating applied under the engine. Is this true? and has it happened to other people also? Thanks, Can

POST 2Original post

Do you ever smell it inside the car? If not then I would say it is normal.

POST 4Original post

Did you ever stop to think that maybe you ran over a skunk?

POST 5Original post

Probably cosmoline then - the oily and waxy protective coating that gets sprayed on various parts under the car - the over-spray burns off for awhile, and seems to be reported worse on some cars than others.

POST 6Original post

K-man-sculpture is on the money - what your smelling is the cosmoline they spray on many of the car's parts to keep them corrosion-free while on the trip over from Finland across all that saltwater. I have more than 18k miles on mine, and I still smell it burning off after a drive. If you do a search on "cosmoline" (without the quotes) you'll get lots of threads/posts from others who have had the same experience. Nothing to worry about. brad

POST 7Original post

Brad & K-man-sculpture - Thanks, i guess thats also what the dealer was talking about. I guess i trust my fellow board members more than the dealer I'd learned my lesson earlier, and if i new it was called cosmoline, i would have definitely searched that term and not posted a new thread. Thanks anyway... Now I know, and knowing is half the battle

POST 8Original post

can928: If you would like to see what cosmoline looks like, pull one of your wheels off. Chances are you'll see the light to dark brown residue from the spray directly on the rims or in the well. Easily removes with Simple Green, P21S wheel cleaner, or WD40. Smells nasty when hot as you know.
