So I'm replacing my front pads and rotors, and when I got the pads out there were these thin pieces of metal stuck to the pistons on 3 of 4 sides.

The "trick" is to use a suitable metal putty knife to work loose the pad stuck to the backing plate.

Coverage and how to read this overview

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

11 eligible posts · 0 unverified posts · 1 discussions match the subject in their title or opening post.

POST 1 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

So I'm replacing my front pads and rotors, and when I got the pads out there were these thin pieces of metal stuck to the pistons on 3 of 4 sides. One pad came out with the metal still stuck to it. Are these shims? Do they just pull out? Because it seems like the ones stuck in there are screwed into the pistons. It looks like the new pads also have similar metal stuck to them already. Can someone please enlighten me? Thanks!

POST 2Original post

Definitely shims. The heat generated by braking has caused them to adhere to the pistons.

I think what you are referring to are the vibration/squeal dampeners. These are glued to the back of the brake pad to the backing plate and have (or had the ones I have seen) a metal basket that slips into the piston which in some way connects the pad to the piston. This works to draw the pad away from the rotor when the brakes are not applied and reduces the chance of brake squeal. The pads can be difficult to remove with these dampeners attached. But the dampeners themselves can be hard to remove from the pad backing plate. The "trick" is to use a suitable metal putty knife to work loose the pad stuck to the backing plate. If one is careful these dampeners can be reused. Or one can buy new ones. It is possible too that Porsche has "dropped" the dampeners from the parts list. This was the case with my 2002 Boxster. When it came time to do the brakes and I was ordering parts I learned the vibration dampeners were no longer part of the parts list and didn't install them. No problems. 'course, had the brakes started making a racket I was prepared to find and fit vibration dampeners. You should check with the parts department of the local dealer and see if dampeners are still part of the brake hardware parts list.

POST 6Original post

Btw, I reuse those dampers, both the solid ones like Jason posted above (for the front brakes) and the spider ones for the rear. Just hit them with high temp adhesive and they will stick good to the pistons. Amazon.com: Thermo-Tec HeavyDuty Spray Adhesive: Automotive Amazon.com: Thermo-Tec HeavyDuty Spray Adhesive: Automotive

Yes. That's it. So I got the calipers off and 3 of 4 dampeners came completely out. Only 1 or 2 look to be reusable. One had the little metal cylinder rusted into the piston. Anyone have a tip on how to remove it? Or how bad would it be to leave in? I'm not sure I'll try to reuse them. The pads I bought have a similar metal plate on the back already.

POST 8Original post

reuse them if you are careful in removing the old pads You don't need any adhesive at all. Just slide the new pads i and you will be fine

POST 9Original post

A putty knife worked for me. I've replaced and reused the dampers depending on their condition.

POST 10Original post

I decided not to reuse them on my rears - no issues after 2k+!miles . +1 for putty knife to get old ones off ..

POST 11Original post

Generally speaking, the dampeners can be reused a couple of times. Then the adhesive is kind of wasted. (Don't ask how much my p-car dealer wants for new ones...outrageous.) I did not reuse the dampeners when I replaced pads/rotors last year (at 65k miles). The only after effect seems to be a clicking sound when pulling into the garage and releasing the brakes...attributable to the pads falling way from the pistons, I think. No big deal. relinuca
