Explicit resolution reports before identified causes, performed actions and suggestions. Within each level, matching component labels precede direct query mentions and inherited thread context; successful versus unsuccessful discussion counts, owner confirmations and independent discussion support determine order. This is not a probability of success.

Coverage and how to read this overview

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

11 eligible posts · 0 unverified posts · 1 discussions match the subject in their title or opening post.

POST 1Original post

Now that the temperature has dropped in KC I note that when I start my car in the morning (or afternoon if its still very cold outside)) it makes a loud "wheez" noise for a second when it starts. Sounds kind of like a reed valve or like when you fold a leaf over to use as a whistle. I replaced my AOS last year (only about 17k miles ago) so I doubt that would be the cause, any other ideas? Cheers, Julian

POST 4Original post

My E46 BMW 330i had the same noise you described due to failing secondary air pump. Replaced it, fixed it. Try to locate first and check if noise if coming from there.

POST 5Original post

I looked up videos for "failing secondary air pumps" and the jet engine sound isn't what I'm getting, mine also only lasts a 1 to 1.5 seconds.

POST 6Original post

The secondary air pump noise on my BMW lasts 20 seconds. If your 987 last only 1.5 seconds, it might be something else but worth looking into the SAP. The SAP is only for emission control during cold start up, I lived and drive my car for 3 months like that before changing it.

POST 7Original post

My 2011 Boxster started making the same noise for about a second or less during this cold snap and I think it is the starter dragging. I have had this issue before on non- Porsche vehicles, but I assume the starter works the same way. The grease on the shaft gets thick and the starter gear doesn't kick out fast enough to clear the flywheel and it spins the starter motor for a second. My noise goes away quick as the car warms up some. Yours may be a different noise but it's something to think about.

POST 8Original post

Hmmm, I like this ^^ I'll drive the car again tomorrow now the road salt is gone away and see what happens (well above freezing now after that arctic wave)

POST 9Original post

I think it is the starter. I had this on my 987.1 before I replaced it. Does it sound like this? -->

POST 10Original post

exactly like that. Thanks for the video link!

POST 11Original post

I believe he neglected to mention disconnecting the negative battery cable BEFORE starting this project... that's important!
