I have a 2009
Cayman
2.9 with around 71k miles. I decided to replace the air oil separator mostly as a precautionary measure, but it also felt like I was getting perhaps a bit more smoke on startup. I just finished that up (can't say that it was the most enjoyable maintenance job, but no too awful) and I'm seeing a fair bit of oil on the engine, mostly towards the rear of the car on the driver's side. The one sensor/connector, in particular, is pretty well covered in oil. Still googling various pictures to identify all of these parts. I've never observed a drop in the oil level in between changes. I've also owned the car for approximately the last 15k miles so I suppose it's possible that this is from a prior issue that was resolved but the results of the leak weren't cleaned.
My current plan is to generally clean things up as well as possible, do the scheduled oil change, and then check back in on it after ~1k miles. I know that sometimes top side oil leaks can be associated with a failing
AOS
so perhaps the replacement will help. The clamps around the intake plenum are fairly grimy and I know that, particularly with the
AOS
issue, you can get oil in there. Is it worth removing the plenum to check? Anything else that I should be evaluating while I have the engine compartment open?
Mine had a lot of oil in it when I did the
AOS
. If it were mine, I would clean the engine as best as I could, then pull the plenum and wipe it out. Don't over tighten the clamp screw...6 ft-lbs IIRC
Thanks, sounds like a plan.
Any decent guide for removing the plenum or is it fairly self explanatory?
I didn't have any guides. Pretty self-explanatory. I do remember breaking the vacuum solenoid mounts on the back of the plenum. Memory is a little fuzzy, but I think I tried to take them off, but it wasn't necessary. Just be careful when disconnecting the electrical connectors.
3.5 ft-lb on the plenum straps. Oil gets into the plenum from the
AOS
and they'll leak if they aren't tight.
Oil can leak past the throttle and then drip from the hose connections at the MAF as well. If you're getting a lot of oil into your intake, try running one bar below full on the oil level, that helped a lot for me.
The corrugated AOS hoses can crack and leak, so check around those as well.
Had same issue with my previous
987.2
C base
And many others do as well if you search on the internet
No blue smoke and drop of oil level but only excessive oil in the plenum and drips the rubber sleeves and then downwards on the floor
Replaced the
AOS
twice in vein
Saw a post the owner replaced the whole engine under warranty
I gave up in the end and let it be
I would suggest you to clean the throttle body and the MAF since the oil would flow the the plenum backwards to the MAF and even the air filter where is the lowest point and you need separate the throttle body and the plenum for cleaning the plenum
