Coverage and how to read this overview

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

12 eligible posts · 0 unverified posts · 1 discussions match the subject in their title or opening post.

POST 1Original post

I'm coming up on seven years of much loved ownership of my 2010 Boxster Base model. In that time I've had the door lock/unlock button on both remotes break (specifically one of the "legs" on that button breaks and allows the button to fall out). Last time I was able to purchase what I believe was a factory replacement body off of Ebay and swap in my electronics and key shank. Aside from a $210 replacement body I could find on Suncoast , everything else appears to be made in China. Does anyone have experience with these Chinese key bodies, or does anyone know of a less $$$ source for factory replacement bodies? Many Thanks in advance! Mike

POST 2Original post

I purchased a 987.1 Boxster last year and it only had one key. After a few weeks I reached into my pocket and found that the button had fallen out and a big hunk of superglue like substance was obvious. Someone had previously tried to repair it. I ordered a "shell" and transferred the guts of the broken key over. I personally think the aftermarket shell is as good or better than the shell I got with the car. 3 Buttons Replacement Key Shell For Porsche 911 Cayman Boxster Carrera GT Remote Key Case Cover Key Fob (3Buttons) https://www.amazon.com/dp/B07M7BF1J.../B07M7BF1J3/ref=cm_sw_r_apan_glt_fabc_ZEA02QK8H61MHVSRQERS?_encoding=UTF8&psc=1

POST 3Original post

Thanks Snakebitten. I'll give one of these a try. From reading some of the reviews, it sounds like they are a close enough copy that I may be able to simply swap the button face onto my existing fob. Mike

POST 4Original post

I intended to do just that. But personally found that the shell and the silicone weatherproof seal was both superior and slightly different in the new one. So I went through the trouble to fully migrate. I suspect that regardless of where the new one is manufactured, today's plastic chemistry is just superior if it is actually applied in the manufacturing process. In this case it seems so.

POST 5Original post

I purchased the same ones in Feb 2020 (just looked on Amazon ). So far - so good (almost 2 years.) You do have to move the immobilizer chip over, I'd suggest something like a small crafts knife or scalpel to cut the glue holding it into the key case. Then just use a tiny dab of glue when seating it into the new case. Crafts knife: https://www.amazon.com/dp/B0006NAU6U/ref=cm_sw_em_r_mt_dp_N545SRXKFCYDGMAKFQNA?_encoding=UTF8&psc=1 Might as well add it to the Amazon order if you don't have one already.

POST 6Original post

I used this key from Amazon . In my case only the button was missing. So I only used the new button and it fit perfectly in the existing key. It’s been over a year and still working great. POST 7Original post

That is indeed the same Amazon product linked above. So it seems we are building consensus!

POST 8Original post

Excellent! Thanks folks! I should have mine from Amazon tomorrow or Tuesday. Hopefully I can effect a simple button swap. Mike

POST 10Original post

If you do end up dissecting the old key to extract the “guts” and transfer them to the new shell, what worked well for me was using a fine toothed saw blade to cut the shell apart, breaking off the plastic pieces with a needle nosed pliers, and pulling the parts out with a quality tweezer. Be sure to check the condition of the rubber membrane under the keys. My old ones had holes in them that you could see when you flexed them.

POST 11Original post

Thanks everyone! I was able to swap the button from the new Amazon shell into the old without resorting to a full body swap. Took the opportunity to install new CR 2032's in both fobs. I went ahead and bought two more shells from Amazon for future spares. Thanks again everyone. This forum and community are truly the best! SilentMike

POST 12Original post

Another big "Thank You." The tiny plastic tabs had broken off the lock/unlock button on both of my keys. Bought the replacements from Amazon and swapped the buttons right over. Fit perfectly.
