Hi all
Boxster
/Caymen owners.
FYI
I have a 2012
Boxster
Black edition with 20,000km. My check engine light came on today. I scanned for the code with my ODB reader and P2181 came up. (Coolant system issue). Reading some posts I found that one cause could be low coolant level and sure enough it was below the minimum level marker. I purchased 50/50 mix from Canadian Tire which indicated OEM for Volkswagen/Audi/

. It’s a dark pink colour. After filling and resting the code it worked. I don’t have any leaks so I’m not sure why this happened. It must have evaporated over time or never filled to proper level from factory. Not sure.
Anyhow, just wanted to share.
The gasket in your coolant fill cap may be on its way out, no longer holding the full cooling system pressure. I had a similar issue with my CS, slightly low coolant and some residue in the trunk cubby with oil and coolant fill spouts. Replacement OE fill caps with gasket are available online for under $30; I wasn't motivated enough to find just a replacement gasket.
I didn’t see any evidence of spillage around the fill spout. However thanks for the info. I may replace the cap for $30 buck if it’s available at the dealership. I won’t buy car parts from Amazon. The seal appears to be okay but it would be good practice to replace it. Thanks,
Dino
A cap inside the engine compartment is also known to cause issues. It's also inexpensive, but you must remove the top engine compartment access cover to get to it. If I had to guess - either one might be the cause.
Unlike what many people think - when the systems are maintained as designed by the factory - they do not need coolant top-ups unless there is a leak or the car overheated. My '09 got a fluid change, new water pump, and coolant caps at 58k miles. I'm now nearing 70k miles and 3 years and I have added NOTHING to the system. I've basically forgotten about it.
