A little background...or you can just skip to the instructions
I had been having intermittent problems with the sound system. My
PCM
would be lit up but no sound. Sometimes, after a few minutes of driving, the speakers would come on with a loud pop, other times the system would work normally. Research showed the ASK amplifier that
Porsche
uses has reliability issues. I have a SPP+ (9 speaker system), and I was OK with the system as it was originally. I wanted to replace the amplifier with a better and more reliable amp. Figuring out all the complexities with an aftermarket unit, I decided to wimp out an go the easy route.
I got another ASK amp from ebay and put it in today.
Instructions Sorry I didn't take any pics
In the
987.2
, the amp is located under the passenger seat. The easy route is to take the seat out, however, AllDatadiy says the AWS (weight sensor under the seat) needs to be reset and recalibrated after seat removal. Also, the seat track bolts are one use only and should be replaced with new ones.
Because of the above, I wanted to avoid all the extra drama. The job is made difficult only because of dealing with limited space. It took me around 1.5 hrs, but you should be able to do better!
1. Move seat full backward and remove the 2 bolts for the amp. I used a 1/4 in drive, 10 mm deep socket.
2. Move seat full forward. Remove the 10mm nut.
3. Removing these allows you a little wiggle room to release the two plugs on the back of the amp.
4.Remove the small
plug
first. There is a small tab on the bottom of the
plug
that needs to be pressed so you can remove the
plug
.
5. Move the amp so you can get a good view of the large
plug
. To unlock it, you need to move the outer shell to the left (toward the center). There is tiny tab on the right side of the shell. I gently pried it up (not sure if it was necessary) and used a screwdriver to push the shell to the left. After this is done, the
plug
comes out easily.
6. On the side of the amp, there is a clip that secures the wire harness to the amp. If you look at your replacement, you will see the fin that it clips to. Pry the clip off (either up or out) with a screwdriver.
7.Manuever the amp from under the AWS cable and pull the amp out.
8.
Plug
the large
plug
into the amp and slide the shell to the right to lock it.
9. This step was the most difficult for me. You need to maneuver the amp back under the AWS cable without unplugging or damaging the control module. I need to use gentle upward force on the cable to get the amp underneath.
10. Position the amp, so you can
plug
the small one in. You should hear it click as it locks in. Also, reclip the side harness. Check the system for sound.
11. Place the amp over the rear mounting stud, and loosely put the nut on.
12 Move the seat full back. (Be sure to remove your tools).
13.Secure the two front bolts back into position. It may be difficult to align the holes with the speed nut in hole because of the carpet. I found it easier to do the inboard one first and then the other.
14. Move the seat full forward and tighten the mounting nut.
