Explicit resolution reports before identified causes, performed actions and suggestions. Within each level, matching component labels precede direct query mentions and inherited thread context; successful versus unsuccessful discussion counts, owner confirmations and independent discussion support determine order. This is not a probability of success.

I'm pretty sure it's the vacuum pump, I used a stethoscope under the car while it was running and it was there even at idle, everything else is silent, other than a little valve train noise.

Coverage and how to read this overview

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

1 eligible posts · 0 unverified posts · 1 discussions match the subject in their title or opening post.

POST 1Original post

My vacuum pump on my '06 Cayman seems to have a tick/knock. It's only noticeable while driving, it's completely silent while idling, and it's more noticeable when the engine is warm. It sounds like very early rod knock. Is it typical to be able to hear something like this? The car had bore scoring when I got it, so I never drove it prior to rebuilding the engine. I don't really know what a "normal" M97 sounds like. It's not a loud knock, if I stick my head out the window I can't hear it from the outside, it just seems to be amplified a bit in the cabin. I'm pretty sure it's the vacuum pump, I used a stethoscope under the car while it was running and it was there even at idle, everything else is silent, other than a little valve train noise. I've read accounts of it making a rod knock-like sound upon failure, but that seems to be after it fails, no mention of sounds leading up to failure. I'm probably going to change it. I don't like when an engine I just built makes a knocking sound. Just wondering if this is an immediate concern, or if I can let it ride until the next oil change or so.
