Explicit resolution reports before identified causes, performed actions and suggestions. Within each level, matching component labels precede direct query mentions and inherited thread context; successful versus unsuccessful discussion counts, owner confirmations and independent discussion support determine order. This is not a probability of success.

For the type of money you're talking about, I would look for something similar, inspected properly of course.

I also had a 3.2 for the same length of time and although still very reliable, I did have to replace a couple of bits (heater fan packed up etc)

is there really such a big difference in running costs between an 89 3.2 and a 91 964 ?

Suggestion

Domster's right, servicing more but the car will be newer and therefore probably more reliable so you'll save it in age related running repairs.

Coverage and how to read this overview

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

9 eligible posts · 0 unverified posts · 1 discussions match the subject in their title or opening post.

0 evidence records excluded for query context · 0 excluded by outcome qualification · 0 adjusted by outcome qualification.

0 acknowledgements have no verified action link; they do not establish a repair result.

POST 1Original post

I think the 964 is a much better car, but it may cost marginally more to run. Major services are about 500 quid compared to about 300. But what is 200 quid once a year when you have a much more modern driving 911... drive them both and you'll see what I mean.

POST 2Original post

Domster's right, servicing more but the car will be newer and therefore probably more reliable so you'll save it in age related running repairs. I had one for 12 months and spent nothing on it other than servicing. I also had a 3.2 for the same length of time and although still very reliable, I did have to replace a couple of bits (heater fan packed up etc)

POST 3Original post

Hi there Whatever the choice, be sure to have a PPI done, could save you loads of good upgrade money later! Good luck !

POST 4Original post

Richard - What's a PPI? (I'm assuming some kind of Porsche Inspection?) Better to just get someone who owns one/knows plenty about them to come with you/let you compare their car to yours etc. The Inspections don't always pick up on the important stuff and also try to scare you with things that aren't really worth worrying about. I know a car that had a POrsche inspection which 'missed' the fact that it had had two new rear corners, a bonnet, front wing..... they said that cos they'd been changed fairly well they didn't think it was important and were concentrating more on mechanical stuff - Fat use that is when you come to sell the car and no-one will touch it cos it's been accident damaged.

POST 5Original post

FWIW, I like the 3.2 as its a more "pure driving experience" - for want of a better description. To my mind the 964 feels heavy compared with earlier 911s especially the C4. You need to put aside some money to look after all 911s so costs will not be enormously different.

POST 6Original post

Can I kick start this discussion again and ask (newbies questions I know) how often servicing needs to be done on a 964, and where in the south (Sussex) I might find a good independent garage?

POST 7Original post

All servicing needs to be done at the same intervals, 6,000 and 12,000 miles. Not sure about your local garages, check out 911&PW maybe?

POST 8Original post

My mate has owned his 964 C4 RHD (right) for 6 months now, and he paid just £13,000. OK, so it has 140,000 miles on the clock, but what a car for the money. It is in good nick, and the last owner did some pretty major servicing last year to the tune of £2,500 or so, so at the moment nothing needs to be done. For the type of money you're talking about, I would look for something similar, inspected properly of course.
