Explicit resolution reports before identified causes, performed actions and suggestions. Within each level, matching component labels precede direct query mentions and inherited thread context; successful versus unsuccessful discussion counts, owner confirmations and independent discussion support determine order. This is not a probability of success.

My understanding is that a higher spec set of 18" cross spoke split rims were fitted from new (picture attached).

When I bought the car about 5 years ago the tyres which were fitted were Pirelli P Zero Rosso 225/40 ZR 18 N4.

2) if the size is correct has anyone else run into this problem?
Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

I need 2 new tyres for the front wheels of my 2002 996.
My understanding is that a higher spec set of 18" cross spoke split rims were fitted from new (picture attached).
When I bought the car about 5 years ago the tyres which were fitted were Pirelli P Zero Rosso 225/40 ZR 18 N4.
My local tyre fitter tells me that they are having problems sourcing the tyres which I find odd.
So, a couple of questions:
1) is it possible that the wrong size of tyre was fitted by the previous owner - if so what is the correct size?
2) if the size is correct has anyone else run into this problem?
They are the right size. It is now a tyre that has been around for years, so probably simply no longer stocked by many.
To be honest, you would be better to look at some of the preferred tyres fitted all round.
Probably not that much more than buying two N rated Rossos up front.
Plus, if the rears are as old they will be gone by now anyway.Just hard and no bite left in them.
225.40.18 front and 265.35.18 rears in PS4, PS5 if you want a good all rounder that are comfortable and quiet.
Maybe a Bridgetsone sport or Conti sport contact if you want a bit more sporty feel on the steering.
You will probably at £200 each for the fronts fitted if going N rated Pirelli but you could be at £500 for Michelins or similar all round.
Thank you gizlaroc - very helpful!
The rear tyres are relatively new as I replaced them - they are Pirelli P Zero Rossos so I was keen to keep all 4 the same
As previously mentioned they are the correct size and usually in plentiful supply as P Zero Rosso N4s as I run them, you'll probably hear only Michelin are the tyres to go for but I prefer the Pirellis with the Porsche collaberated tyre compound makeup and stiffer sidewall.
You also have the same wheels as me  BBS Sports Concept 2.
I would not argue with that.
The Michelins kill off that lovely precise steering you get with many other tyres. Quieter and more comfy, but unless it is a motorway cruiser, and sure most don't own a 20 year old Porsche for that, not really what I'm sure most of us want from these cars.
I had a lot of problems with Pirelli, as it would seem have others. Michelin appear to be the tyre of choice I think in PS4 (or the newer PS5) versions.
