Hi there:
I’m desperately looking for any insights on why my 996 continues to smoke and continues to use oil while on track, but no smoke or oil consumption off track, after replacing the AOS for the second time.
First lap at CTMP coming out of 5B big cloud of oil smoke, after 5 laps pulled off, oil was down 400ml.
Next
2 startups there was clouds of oil smoke.
The rest of the drive home, and since no issues.
I drive the car year round, drive it aggressively and it never smokes or uses any oil while driving it on the street.
I see other 996s on this the track with no smoke issues so I know it must be something with my car.
Any help would be greatly appreciated. Please feel free to call, email.. drop by.
Thanks.

Do you have a proper oil sump installed ?

I used the x-51 pan in my previous 996 and didn't have any issues. It's well baffled.

Check your oil level. If it's at the "full" mark, it's too high. Keep it between the upper and lower marks and mid level on the dipstick (if you have one).
I have the same issue with oil levels. My car also smoked badly during a recent track day with the oil level at full on the dipstick

Mike- There is a vent in the top of the sump that is accessed by the tip of the AOS to create negative pressure, which by the way helps take out moisture in the oil in colder climates. If you are using R rated tires for your track day, then you are getting oil slosh up the side walls of your sump into the that vent hole. I have a LN deep sump (2 qt additional oil) with windage tray, thinking the windage tray would help prevent the oiling down of the AOS. Not so running RE71R's. I went through 2 OEM AOS's then changed the Porsche Motorsports AOS, without another blue smoke event.
I drive a

S, with the engine backwards from a 996, but the same
M97 engine
. The LN windage plate is actually higher up inside of the sump than the standard floor of the sump, so closer to the vent hole. The positive side is the LN deep sump keeps the oil cooler during hot events and the 997 down tubes lets the oil flow from the heads to the windage plate without any resistance of the swirl pots. LN suggest Driven

-9 10W50 oil that does not foam in the heads.
I am glad you posted here on the

owners think the 996 AOS will solve their R rated tire, sump oil slosh, blue smoke problems. Not so. Only the Porsche Motorsports version will do this job.
