My introduction to the Porsche world was a 2014 Cayman Base, and not only did it confirm my childhood assumptions about what it felt like to drive a Porsche, it also taught me about the features and options that I want to have in the long term. Since it's impossible (or prohibitively expensive) to retrofit many of those options to my 981, I figured that I might as well start looking for a car that had them... and if I was going to drop the coin to go that far, then I might as well drop a little* bit more and get what I really wanted in the first place: a 911.
My 2014 Guards Red 991 should arrive in a few days. It's a very exciting time. I'll post a pic or two once it arrives.
This brings me to my questions: The 991 I found has the Carrera Classic 20" rims. I was originally looking for 19's, as I'd heard that the 20's ride a little hard. And, though striking, the Carrera Classic design wasn't at the top of my rim style choice list.
So, for those of you that have the Carrera Classic 20's,
What is your opinion about them and their ride quality?
And secondly,
If I don't like them, are there any good places online or around the southeast to possibly exchange rims with other Porsche owners/dealerships?
The Porsche dealerships around here haven't seemed too keen on the idea of exchanges (though they seem very open to selling me a new set of whatever I want), and there simply isn't a huge community of P-cars in my town (Athens, GA).
Congrats, check wheeldynamics...
I think you will like the wheels on the 911. I've got a CPO 981 CS with the 20" Carrera Classics. Ride quality is great in my opinion, sporty but not too hard. I daily drive my Lexus for comfort whereas my 981 is my weekend ride. Personally, I would never look at a Porsche without the 20's. The look of the 20's is just too perfect. Also, I think the Carrera Classics look best on the 981 (they were my first choice of wheels on the 981 although I would have still purchased the car if it had one of the other 20" wheel styles).
I would not worry about ride quality of modern 20 wheels. But if you want something more aggressive looking - I second wheeldynamics for very reasonably priced great looking wheels.
Echo the ride of 20'sis just fine. I don't notice much if any difference between 20's and my 18" winter wheels. I think people who complain about ride quality with 20's vs 19's are either imagining things or have very sensitive tushes.
It's subjective, but I think Carrera Classics are the nicest wheels Porsche sells.
I have a 981 with 19" wheels and a 991.2 with 20 inch wheels. I frequently drive them back to back on the same roads. I really can't tell the difference in ride quality.
I have the 20s on my new to me 981 S and was surprised at how good the ride was, I was concerned about harshness too and haven't been on much rough stuff yet with the car but I was expecting worse and am pleasantly surprised that it is quite comfortable. I do love the dark gray color to hide brake dust with just the polished front though I really prefer a BMW CSL or BBS weave look. I did however just order a set of 18" snow tires, would have preferred 19s but I picked up a clean set of 5 spoke wheels for $1000 shipped and the tires have approximately 90% tread. Love the BBS look Wheeldynamics wheels though and if was going to buy a new set I would probably go with them in 19s.as my all season tires leaving the 20s with a set of PS4s for summer / HPDE events. Then use Continental DWS (up 1 width to get availability) for late fall till early spring. (I also have a Nissan Titan I affectionately call my snow and tow). When I wear out the snow tires, we will see if I sell wheels for something else or change tires. Either way, if you do not like your wheels that came with your car, the secondary market to sell them is VERY strong and should let you buy what you want is really the point I was making.
I've had 20" wheels on my 981 CS, 991.1 C2S, and my 991.2 C2S, and they all have great ride, great and great to drive. 20" is probably the best for street use.
I ended up bailing out on the Guards Red 2014 and picking up an Agate Grey 2013. Jesus tapdancing christ is this thing is amazing!
As luck would have it, the 2013 came with OEM 19s that i much prefer to the Carrera Classic 20s on the other car. I'm sure that (technically) I *could* be happier with a car... but I'm not sure how.
I heard the 20” run rough and loud. I just ordered mine with the base 19” ones.
