On the one hand i see the benefits of the warranty and after a quick check of the Porsche Website it looks that 3 year warranty can be had for around £2100 which seems a no brainer given what potentially could go wrong.

Suggestion

Servicing agreed, It’s repair items like exhaust bolts that a main dealer wants a £1000 to fix and a specialist will do for £250 where there’s more of an issue.

I think the warranty is decent value , it's just when it comes to service time generally an OPC is after replacing many parts that might not desperately need replacing .

IMO the forums do seem to attract opinions that the cars should & must be run under warranty but ultimately it all comes down to the risk appetite.

Coverage and how to read this overview

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

POST 1 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

I know all the details on the Porsche Warranty but my car now being 10yrs old (981GTS) i'm wondering if i'm better off now going down the Indi route for servicing and not going full P Warranty which locks me into the OPC for servicing. All i read is how OPC's are ripping off customers at service intervals

POST 2Original post

Then it might be a good idea for you to do quite a lot more reading about the 981GTS faults and foibles, bearing in mind that the internet tends towards the negative reviews, and then put the warranty value against likelihood of an incident, indy servicing costs Vs OPC costs, and the price of a posh coffee

POST 4Original post

Worth having a search of the forums. Plenty of opinions on this within the last 6 months, including a chap who put up spreadsheet screenshots of the 'true' cost of the warranty, once the higher servicing costs are factored in. IMO the forums do seem to attract opinions that the cars should & must be run under warranty but ultimately it all comes down to the risk appetite. Some of the 'savings' quoted are not entirely comparable as if the car wasn't under warranty most probably wouldn't be going to OPC for the work.

Just reading reports of a service at an OPC being 1800/2k . Swings and roundabouts which means for sake of ease and peace of mind i'll likely go down the OPC route. Was just curious on others thinking

POST 6Original post

My Indy describes the 981 as "bullet proof." Mine is 10 1/2 and I've had it 9yrs, opting out of Porsche warranty at 5 and over to Indy servicing. Both A/C condenser replaced at separate times, but that seems to be standard. Other than that just service items. Never used one drop of oil in 69k miles. Of course anything could go wrong in future but I think if you know how it's been treated gives you more confidence. Indy costs average 50-60% of OPC and I think they do a better job, depending who you go to. RPM and GCR in my case.

I was thinking along the lines of Pie Performance as my closest Indi for servicing although i'm familiar with the likes of RPM and JZM. My cars on 26k miles now

POST 8Original post

Mine's on 69k miles. If yours is a garage queen for long periods, might that affect reliability adversely?

POST 9Original post

I have two cars on the OPC warranty one is 9 years old and the other 12 years old. On average, the warranty has paid out 3x its cost during my ownership. Service is 2x expensive at OPC. Worth it for me

Service is 2x expensive at OPC. Worth it for me Yes but that's 3 x OPC pricing. They fix very little and replace a part that an indy could possibly repair. It's not comparing like for like. I ran my 981 GT4 under warranty and in over 4yrs never had cause to claim. Given the cost of the GT4 warranty is the same as a base Cayman and that it would be more appealing to a private buyer with some warranty cover I kept it on. I run a 2016 718 Boxster without warranty and use my trusted Indy who I've known for over 12yrs. Agree with other comments when I was looking the 981 was regarded as 'bulletproof'. There's always something that can go wrong and it's down to your appetite for risk

POST 11 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

DJMC said: Mine's on 69k miles. If yours is a garage queen for long periods, might that affect reliability adversely? Affect reliability in that it's not driven as often? Possibly, I don't really know. On a dry day in the winter I'll give it a drive out & get the fluids moving & since April I've covered 3k miles so I guess annual mileage will likely be around 5k per year maybe slightly less. I think the warranty is decent value , it's just when it comes to service time generally an OPC is after replacing many parts that might not desperately need replacing .

The exhaust bolts are comparatively expensive to resolve also.

12 year service on 991 C4S, completed a couple of months ago OPC £2250 Well respected Indy, often mentioned here £1950 Not worth the hassle of getting into a debate should there be a warranty issue

POST 14Original post

I would not run mine without the warranty, having a PDK makes it even more worth having IMO. At some point I did a proper comparison between Indy v OPC servicing and with what I pay there isn’t that much difference. With the warranty on top of the difference it is still worth it to me. It isn’t about appetite for risk, it is about peace of mine. I often go abroad in it, what use is an Indy to you if your car goes wrong abroad?

Never run my warranty on my cars, once our of their new car warranty its never renewed and I have the choice of servicing which is usually Indy. I don't know how much I've saved but its been a lot.

POST 19Original post

Discombobulate said: Which, or course you can have done at an indy, while keeping servicing at OPC. That's what I do. Repairs out of warranty would go to indie with OEM parts. I must have been unlucky as my Macan had all sorts of suspension and electrical faults, plus some stuff related to the driveshafts. Easily 5-figure worth of spend (at OPC, no idea at indie). full Porsche service history and warranty all along is worth something at sale time. I know I'd be happy to pay £2/3k more for a car with OPC warranty as I'd know the service history would have to be up to scratch and the owner cares.

Agreed At the service I needed a new aux belt tensioner. Parts cost was much the same at OPC and said Indy. Labour was no doubt more but since the car was at the OPC I let them get on. I may have paid £100 more than I needed to but it was done straight away and I didn’t need another trip to a garage. But if it had been something that was easily picked later (discs for example) would have gone elsewhere
