It will need new pads shortly, but the ones on there are not completely warn, but they don't stop the car as quickly as the 993 Turbo calipers I have fitted onto my Audi TT.

you tend to be travelling much faster and in a heavier car than most others...try changing the brake fluid if it hasn't been done for a while.

Suggestion

Your 996 brakes are designed to work harder the harder you push, any Audi/BMW I've had the brakes are like a switch, with the Porsche you have to use more leg but it's a lot easier to feel what's going on.

Coverage and how to read this overview

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

12 eligible posts · 0 unverified posts · 1 discussions match the subject in their title or opening post.

POST 1 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Picked up my 996tt yesterday, X50 and I am scared of my own car! One question, the brakes, are they crap on all 996s or just mine? It will need new pads shortly, but the ones on there are not completely warn, but they don't stop the car as quickly as the 993 Turbo calipers I have fitted onto my Audi TT. Car has the OPC warranty so if there is something wrong then I want to get it fixed ASAP!

POST 2Original post

A 996TT with x50 and DMS remap is going to probably be over 500bhp - standard brakes are no use for this. TBH standard brakes are useless on the TT full stop - you have to really stamp on them....

POST 3Original post

996 brakes crap???? :? Porsche brakes are some of the best in the world. In the 996, they are not servoed (as they would be on an Audi TT, say) so you need to depress the brake pedal that bit harder before you feel the bite. ~ Maxie

POST 4Original post

don't confuse over servo'd Audi/BMW brake feel with fixed caliper (Porsche) progression. Your 996 brakes are designed to work harder the harder you push, any Audi/BMW I've had the brakes are like a switch, with the Porsche you have to use more leg but it's a lot easier to feel what's going on.

POST 5 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

OK, so maybe I was a bit harsh! I am used to the feel of the servo assisted brakes, but even hammering my foot down hard on the pedal it doesn't stop as well as I had expected. My friend who has been driving a Boxster S for 3 years and has driven his bro's 996 Targa also commented on the lack of performance from the brakes on my tt. Have seen the big brembo kits on the web, but I am guessing that would probably invalidate my warranty or something stupid!

POST 6Original post

well as two TT owners I think we can agree THEY ARE CRAP. But you tend to be travelling much faster and in a heavier car than most others...try changing the brake fluid if it hasn't been done for a while.

POST 7Original post

what about a pad upgrade? is there anything out there that's a good alternate to the OEM pad?

POST 8Original post

Std TT brakes up front are only 4 pots IIRC if so, adequate but not stunning anyway it's all about the cooling

POST 9Original post

they are 4 pots and so crap for quite a heavy car - they are crap in the GT3 I thought compared to other 911's I've owned cooling a bit irrelevant on the road and std porsche pads as good as any

POST 10Original post

Can you tell me what your boost meter is showing with the x50 and dms. Is it around 1.3? Regards, Neil

POST 12Original post

I know what you mean about brakes not feeling adequate I thought the same with my tt but I have been assured they are working correctly, you just need to push a bit harder... I know they work because the abs has cut in a few times, particularly at the moment with the weather conditions as they are, (Damp roads, grit etc)!! I, like you, expected to "bang my nose on the windscreen" when I touched the brake pedal and it doesn't happen, that being said as long as you push hard then it really does pull you up quickly when you need it.... If you are still in any doubt get it checked at OPC or a good independant. They will have far more experience and should know straight away if there is a problem.
