If it was the 996 that you mentioned on a previous message that was a 1 owner car with FSH and 50K and offered around £19.000 then even taking into account these bits that need doing which are all common on 996 then it looks like a good deal, if the history is good and the condition of cause.

I would say that unless it is an engine issue and the car is clean...you should go for it and try to get as much off the price as you can.

But if I were to get a car inspected, have umpteen things declared wrong with it, but as long as I can prove I bought the parts (whose to say I don't then take the parts right back to the shop the next day) then they are happy to warranty the car!

Coverage and how to read this overview

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

POST 1 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Just had the 996 911 C2 Cab that I was due to pick tomorrow inspected at OPC. They have found Aircon condenser leaking both side £774.75 Tyres Low Wipers need replacing Brake disc showing wear and corrosion Battery not fully charged Crack on the screen The aircon condenser voids me being able to take out the extended warranty. Any thoughts?

POST 2Original post

Reject the car, or reach some sort of agreement with the Seller. JohnC 993turbo

POST 3Original post

Ask for £1-1.5k off, buy the car, take it to an indi, get a second opinion on the pads and disks (which don't need to be done to get a warranty either way) get the work done that needs to be done to get the warranty, get it inspected again (might be able to et this done for free as it's the second time and you're getting the warranty) buy the warranty. Good luck!

POST 4Original post

You should be able to get the condensors done at an indy for less than £500 all in.

POST 5 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Indy which will come to me £430, emailed seller and asked for this to be deducted from the price. Awaiting a response. Have seven days to fax Porsche with the invoice showing I have purchased the parts.

POST 6Original post

That's interesting, so if you prove you bought that parts,is that enough for them to give you the warranty without having to pay for another 111 point inspection? Or do they need proof the condensers were fitted?

POST 7 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Need to prove I have the parts within 7 days, no inspection required within this timeframe.

POST 8Original post

That's crazy! On another thread ( http://www.porscheclubgbforum.com/tm.asp?m=341867 ) they won't give the buyer a warranty due to questionable servicing history even if the current condition of the car is perfect. But if I were to get a car inspected, have umpteen things declared wrong with it, but as long as I can prove I bought the parts (whose to say I don't then take the parts right back to the shop the next day) then they are happy to warranty the car! Well, that's good news for you at least![ ]

POST 9Original post

The brakes and discs are always needing replaced..on my last car a 996 the brakes where done and after I sold the car which was only 4 months after the warrranty was bought the new owner was not happy about the brakes squelling took it to a OPC and quesss what ...you need your discs and pads done sir. I would ensure you get enough money off the car to cover all the work required there are far to many cars out there to be buying one where it is going to cost you money Good luck

POST 10Original post

True and laughably they are not even covered by the extended warranty [&:] garyw

POST 11Original post

Hi Steve. I do have a thought on this; don't buy it. There are literally hundreds of 996's on the market these days. Quite simply, you don't have to take on this sort of headache on for the sort of money you're contemplating spending. Ask yourself a simple question; would you consider taking this on if it were a Mondeo? I don't think so. You'd look elsewhere for another car. I suggest that you do the same here as there are plenty of them around in better condition. Finally, are you really sure that you want a cab? I think that they're pretty woeful and can't compare to a coupe, plus the re-sale is always worse - no one wants them, we simply don't get the weather here. If you really have to have a drop-top then just get a Boxter - it's a better car which has been specifically designed to not have a roof from birth. The 996 wasn't, they added that model later and you can tell. Oh, and you'll save yourself a stack of cash and still probably be able to get a higher spec'd car than the one you're considering - and have two boots! And yes, I do have a 996. Adrian.

POST 12Original post

Those are very good points Adrian!! sound advice and worth taking on board! With the amount of 996's about the choice is vast!!! I'd be looking for a huge discount to make it worth my while ... unless this is the car of your dreams?? I'd still be saying I'm off to look around anyway and wait for a drop in price!! Is it true about scuttle shake as yes they weren't supposed to be cab's? Unless your hardcore how many times do you get your top odff in the UK? So buying a Boxter dooes make lots of sense! I'm really happy with my 996 but I know I paid top money but it was my first purchase of a very expensive car so I was jittery and lost by the amount of cars out there!!! I have learn't lots from these threads and conversations since!

POST 13Original post

I would say that all those things listed are those which will go at one stage or another whichever 996 you buy. The condensers and brake disks are a real problem. I have replaced all my disks and within weeks are showing heavy signs of rust residue. The cracked windscreen is a £70 job if fully comp. Batteries can be an issue this time of year etc. I would say that unless it is an engine issue and the car is clean...you should go for it and try to get as much off the price as you can. However, you will know the right car when you see it!!! I don't see these issues as major issues. Good luck

POST 14Original post

Steve. The problems highlighted on your list really ammount to nothing. Most 911s you take into Porsche for a 111 point check will fail on things like this. Unless new, brakes will always show signs of wear. I bet they dont need replacing for some time, and they dont come into the warranty either. The condensers are renound for leaking, You could do this yourself for about £350, including a re-gas, or if your not mechanical, anyone else would be cheaper than Porsche. What you dont say, is the price of the car, Are you paying a sum that takes into account these minor repairs ? Or if they will knock off the cost of the repairs, at Porsche prices, then its sorted. If they wont budge on the price, I know what I would do. Regards. Bob

POST 15 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

It is a clean car yet the owner was only willing to knock £200 off the price. I have decided not to go for it as there are plenty out there. Thanks for all your replies. Steve

POST 16Original post

Steve I think we may be over looking somthing here. If it was the 996 that you mentioned on a previous message that was a 1 owner car with FSH and 50K and offered around £19.000 then even taking into account these bits that need doing which are all common on 996 then it looks like a good deal, if the history is good and the condition of cause. Quiet rare to get a one owner car of this vintage? It may be a diffrent car and that one may have been a dog? I know that even if there are loads of cars about and they may seem like a great deal till you look at them and then find out the history is not what people call a full history and the condition is far from good. Phil

POST 17 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

The 19k car sold, missed it by an hour. This car was priced at 26k

POST 18Original post

Scuttle shake is not significant. If you drive a Coupe and Cab back to back, you'll possibly notice but unless you're a track day God, it doesn't matter. The only time you are likely to notice is with the hard top in place. The body flexes, the roof doesn't and the seals squeak a little (or a lot if the hardtop is poorly aligned).

POST 19Original post

In that case then i understand why you are walking away from it. Good luck Phil
