Explicit resolution reports before identified causes, performed actions and suggestions. Within each level, matching component labels precede direct query mentions and inherited thread context; successful versus unsuccessful discussion counts, owner confirmations and independent discussion support determine order. This is not a probability of success.

It was the removing alternator part that stopped me from trying.
Leading evidence: 'removing alternator part' (1 discussions report identifying this cause; no attributable repair resolution). Across 1 matching discussions, the most frequently mentioned possible cause is 'removing alternator part' (1 discussions; 1 report identifying it and 0 suggest it). The most frequently discussed action is 'Check oil saturday morning i managed' (1 discussions). For that action, 0 discussions report a resolution and 0 report an unsuccessful attempt. No action has an explicit, attributable resolution report under the current rules. These are forum reports and suggestions, not a confirmed diagnosis.

Good tip...I changed my air filter with a drop in K&N last Saturday at about the same temp (Chicago) and didn't think much of that being brittle let alone breaking off when being un-clipped.

Checking the oil Saturday morning I managed to rip the oil filler tube from its base.

The plastic in the coupling becomes very brittle, most people including myself accidentally broke it while trying to replace the tube or working around that area.

Alternator has a spring loaded "thing" on the back end that pops out when you tighten the alternator mounting bolt, but sometimes it refuses to pop in after years of never being touched.

Hardest part for me was the alternator, it took ages and to neighbors it was probably an awesome sight seeing a guy hammer at something in the engine bay of the 911 then use the pry bar on that "something" for hours.
Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

Checking the oil Saturday morning I managed to rip the oil filler tube from its base. Just tore apart when I unclipped it to add oil. Duh. It's a plastic part subject to heat cycling so probably just got brittle with age. Add about 32 degrees in air temp and it let go.
$60 part, but looks like a bunch hours of labor to install.
Be careful out there kids.
Unless my reading comprehension has totally failed me I'm having a hard time picturing unclipping the oil filler tube to add oil. The SOP is to remove the cap.
My 996 had a "telescoping" oil filler tube, allowing you to add oil without trying to get a small funnel into a cramped engine compartment and spill oil on the engine.
Mine also broke and needed to be replaced.
I have a new one but shudder at the work involved to change it. I ended up getting this rubber tape from an electrician buddy. They use it to insulate outdoor wires. I ended up wrapping it around my filler tube at the broken spot and building a nice joint with it. 8000 km ago and still looks like the day I did it.
Been there, done that.
It is NOT that difficult as it seems. Take out the airbox, MAF, TB, accessory belt, and alternator. Then two bolts holding the tube down to the block become accessible.

Oh and be careful about the coolant coupling that goes from AOS. The plastic in the coupling becomes very brittle, most people including myself accidentally broke it while trying to replace the tube or working around that area.

Mine broke too, more or less just got old.
Put in a $4 rubber piece from home depot to fit over the break, and if that doesn't work I'll go to NAPA and see if they make a radiator hose that will fit over it.
=)
$450 to repair at dealer. Parts + 3 hours of labor. It was the removing alternator part that stopped me from trying.
And though to each his own, I make it a point not to do hillbilly fixes. Original parts and proper repairs only.
