Fitted a £25 heat shield and problem is solved - bit tricky to do and I guess I will need a new SM eventually but so far all is well.

I have recently (yesterday ) replaced the battery (Bosch silver) and the car (996 -1998) refuses to start when hot - the starter will barely turn the engine - symptoms resemble a "flat" battery but leave it for half and hour and she bursts into life - car is in daily use (only bought it last week).

There is a guard u can buy for it, Or, use the later starter motor (90> spec) which was slightly smaller.

just found this on the web.....refers to another make of car but seems to make sense - any thoughts?
Arr this is a realy common problem!! and simple! The starter motors were mounted far to close to the exhaust down pipe (just look at it) This caused them to get sluggish when hot because they overheated, over the years it takes its toll on it! There is a guard u can buy for it, Or, use the later starter motor (90> spec) which was slightly smaller.

hot start problem....
Many thanks - but my problem relates to a lack of umph at the starter motor - engine simply will not turn when the engine is hot! --- having said that today it was a bit better and did start - still slugish SM - think I will get new one and hope for the best!!!

Doesn't make any sense that the starter motor is sluggish when the engine is hot; surely it is easier to turn a hot engine over as the oil etc will be thinner. Your theory on heat somehow affecting the starter motor itself may be correct.
Heatshield for starter....
Fitted a £25 heat shield and problem is solved - bit tricky to do and I guess I will need a new SM eventually but so far all is well. Not surprised that the starter gets hot - it is located directly on top of the engine - just right to slowly cook it!!!!
ps I managed to get hold of a Porsche 996 workshop manual (1000 + pages!) which is a fabulous source of essential information!!!!!
