Also have a terrible grumbling/rattling noise from the back when setting off (seems worse when cold)

Coverage and how to read this overview

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

POST 1 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

I got a base 992, picked up new in December, 2023 model. I have done 2700 miles and noticed more than average vibration and groaning noise from the engine when driving slow in normal mode mainly between 1500 - 2000 revs. Is this normal. It does become less noticeable in sports mode. Any fellow 992 owners noticed this too? Is it normal thing in 992s. Thanks for sharing your experience.

POST 3Original post

Can't say I've noticed this Docmem. Has it been like this from day one, or something developed over time?

POST 4 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Noticed since day 1. Not spoken to the dealer yet. Will update but was just checking the fellow owners

POST 5 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Notice this thread on Rennlist with similar problem. https://rennlist.com/forums/992/1314261-engine-vib...

POST 6Original post

Interesting thread and touching wood I can't say I've noticed this as I'm quite sensitive to sounds and rattles etc. I do get an occasional vibration behind the dash though dependant on road surfaces and I know this is also a common fault on some 992's. Seems like the problem you're talking about is more common on the base 992 Carrera's, and it might be due to the engine tune if it's rpm related, as the base might be sitting at lower revs in normal driving conditions compared to an S or GTS. But there is the odd C2S and Turbo S owner who has noticed the issue in the Rennlist thread as well, so don't know...

POST 7Original post

Apologies for resurrecting a zombie thread but thought I would add to the question in case there was a pattern. New to me Targa 4S 992, 2022. 5,500 miles. Driving in Normal mode, 8th gear = horrible drone at 1500 rpm, so bad it starts a rattle from the back somewhere. Unfortunately this is 72mph on the motorway speed. Switch to Sport mode, drops and holds 7th, rpm raises, no drone. So I can get round it but I can't believe it's just a quirk.

Are you sure its the engine and not something resonating at them revs, exhaust shielding etc

POST 9Original post

Engine mounts. I had it on a brand new car. Porsche found not fix it. Was with them for 5 months. Car rejected.

POST 10Original post

POST 11Original post

I’ve noticed it ( GTS ), believe it’s because the pdk pushes into higher gear and engine labours till you either accelerate through it or as noted above switch to sport ( engine drops a couple of gears ) and drone disappears…. Could drive it on manual I suppose!

POST 12Original post

Mine is in with the OPC today - took the tech out who heard it too. But it's been classified as 'they all do that, Sir'. Something about turbos spooling up. Tempted to reject the car: it's a small thing but when it happens, it's like nails being dragged across a blackboard to my ears.

POST 14Original post

My GT3 Touring has this droning noise as well. When I switch to Sport it disappears.

POST 16Original post

I’m having this issue as well (GTS) 2024 Terrible droning at 1500rpm on the motorway in 8th Gearbox just changes up too soon obviously to acheive economy etc but having come out of a 991.2 gts it just feels horrible. Also have a terrible grumbling/rattling noise from the back when setting off (seems worse when cold) Anyone else had that? Had it in to Opc and they said they all do that! I can’t believe Porsche would allow a £140k car to sound like that

POST 17Original post

Just thinking outside the box but does the 991/992 have cylinder deactivation? If so turn off the stop/start and this will turn it off. It makes a terrible drone on the 718s so it's the first thing I do when starting the car.

POST 18Original post

o bought a lightly used 24 plate 992 S which had that vibration last year - i was also told they all did it. that combined with the tyre drone caused me to sell the car after about 1000 miles. Luckily I hadn't sold my Boxster GTS 4.0 which is in my opinion a more enjoyable car.

POST 19Original post

I’ve owned 2 992’s now a C4 which I sold because it had the 1500rpm drone in 8th gear. I changed it for a C2S and that does it too . I hate it and think it’s incapable just to say it’sa characteristic in a £150k car. Apparently the Americans have had the issue cured with a different rear engine mount. I hope i can go forward with this rework.

POST 20Original post

Shame. I’m on a 19 plate 992s and have no such problem and at 34k miles.

POST 22Original post

I have a rattling noise on my manual GTS, one you can hear rather than feel, at about 1200-1500rpm. I’ve heard similar on other cars with turbo actuators but that’s usually been off throttle. It just sounds a bit…..s t. First Porsche and I’m really struggling to bond with it.
