Explicit resolution reports before identified causes, performed actions and suggestions. Within each level, matching component labels precede direct query mentions and inherited thread context; successful versus unsuccessful discussion counts, owner confirmations and independent discussion support determine order. This is not a probability of success.

I've got the HIDs4u kit from a couple years ago: it was the first digital RF-filtered set they did.
Leading evidence: 'first digital rf-filtered set they did' (1 discussions report identifying this cause; no attributable repair resolution). Across 1 matching discussions, the most frequently mentioned possible cause is 'first digital rf-filtered set they did' (1 discussions; 1 report identifying it and 0 suggest it). The most frequently discussed action is 'Install by my local specialist' (1 discussions). For that action, 0 discussions report a resolution and 0 report an unsuccessful attempt. No action has an explicit, attributable resolution report under the current rules. These are forum reports and suggestions, not a confirmed diagnosis.

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

Hi,
A few threads on here prompted me to accept that the lights on my 996 C2 Cab (2000) are pretty pants. So I thought about upgrading to HIDs (dont even know what it stands for...)
So I searched the forum for advice and got myself all confused. Can anyone help with some advice that is probably very basic...
1) I just want to get better front headlights (not fussed about side etc). Is there a standard kit I can get that includes everything I need (dipped/beam/main lights etc)?
2) are these kits just bulbs? or kits that include some form of casing etc?
3) I am actually fine with basic mechanics, but don't want to alter anything. Could I fit these myself and, more importantly, can I adjust them (which I have read needs to be done to be legal?)
4) Am I right in reading that if I want white ones, I need to go for a 4300 colour rating? (I dont want blue - but that is based on colour only, am i being silly? Is blue brighter?)
5) What on earth is 'ballast' that I see is mentioned on the websites?

Thanks for any help with this.
I bought a set from Hids4u. I was advised by the man at hids4u to buy the set listed as the "ultimate kit" as this apparently has the necessary electronic gubbins that stops warning lights coming up.
I had them fitted by my local specialist. £35 well spent in my view! They can be adjusted, but you may need to adapt/drill out the light fitting slightly to pass the bulb holder or something in.
Some issues-
- They are not quite as bright as I'd like. Maybe they can't be for MOT/Road Traffic reasons, and of course they are not self-levelling like factory fit jobs. But the ones on my BMW 3 series were phenomenal, and these are not quite the quantum leap I was hoping for, especially in the wet with oncoming cars.
- They seem to shake a bit, giving a slightly annoying but vey mild 'jiggle' to the light over a bumpy road.
- Despite the "ultimate" circuitry, I do from time to time get the oil and battery warning lights coming on when I fire up the lights after start-up.
That all said, they are a massive improvement, and I'd recommend them.
But I wonder if another set might be better. I may see if I can get some replacements under warranty in view of the warning lights which they said would not happen...
The ballasts are the starters basically- they work like a flourescent bulb (i.e. arcing in an inert gas) as opposed to power passing though a filament like a conventional bulb.
I've got the HIDs4u kit from a couple years ago: it was the first digital RF-filtered set they did.
Since then the units have been brilliant. The increase in light output over standard with 4300K bulbs is AMAZING. 4300K bulbs are the brightest available. Once you install them, they sit in a manner which do not need adjusting. The entire headlamp unit in the 996 tilts and can be adjusted: but do this as a one off and you'll be fine. NB: the Boxster headlamp units do not tilt... some 996s have had their headlamp units replaced with non-moving Boxster units by previous owners.
Just do it - you will not regret it. Make sure you get the best kit available: buy cheap, buy twice.
