Makes me wonder if it is a specific tire thing (not many people are using the tires that I have on my car) or some other reason.

Coverage and how to read this overview

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

POST 1Original post

Howdy! I’ve been dailying my 987.2 base which is pretty stock. It is largely highway commuting, although occasionally I take the twisty mountain road instead (but inevitable traffic on that makes it not very fun). It still has the Sumitomo HTR Z5 tires it came with in the stock 18” sizes. I was checking tire wear last weekend and noticed that the center of the rear tires is definitely more worn than the edges. This is usually indicative of too high of tire pressure, but I’ve been running it at 33-34psi cold, (and 31 in front), but I’ve never had this problem before (but I’ve also never ran tires this wide, either). The door jam sticker says 30F/31R. Is that 3psi enough to appreciably wear the center of the tire more than the edges? I figured that since the 987.1 specified much higher pressure, this would be ok… maybe not?

POST 2Original post

I'm going to guess that the several pounds above recommendation is in fact sufficient to affect the center tread wear. And, while the pressure recommendations were in fact higher on the .1 models, it's my understanding that the suspension setups were different enough to justify the different tire pressure recommendations. My opinion is based on reading as much as possible regarding the 987s over the past 17 or so years of 987.1 ownership. Cheers.

POST 3Original post

Can you elaborate a little more on this, as I thought the suspension setups and tire sizes were unchanged between 987.1 and 987.2 ?

POST 4Original post

Just what I've read over the years and was told by a dealer's service manager, after trying to understand why. Unfortunately I'm unable to elaborate.

POST 5Original post

Highway driving will wear the center a bit faster due to centrifugal forces and less edge where due to little hard cornering.

POST 6Original post

Thank you all for the replies. I’m still trying to wrap my head around if I am running below the 987.1 recommended pressure (isn’t that like 38 rear? I don’t really know), it surprises me that 34psi would show up as center wear. I’d imagine the 987.1s that were dailies really had even more exaggerated tire wear? I’ve already dropped the pressure closer to 31, fwiw.

POST 7Original post

Simply put, your cold pressures are too high. You have the evidence, time to heed that!

POST 8Original post

Noted and already done, but it sure seems like all the 987.1 folks with a door jam sticker calling for 37psi rear would ALL be having this tire wear pattern - even more so than I am. Makes me wonder if it is a specific tire thing (not many people are using the tires that I have on my car) or some other reason.
