Coverage and how to read this overview

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

POST 1Original post

Hi guys, really want to make the shifter in my new to me 08 Cayman feel amazing and precise. It had lots of play in all directions before, installed one of the ebay short shift kits and it feels great front to back now, but horizontally still feels just as bad while in gear, like 50% of the play of neutral left to right. Looking at all the linkages by the shifter, everything seems tight, the connections at the back on the transmission itself, look good as well. Yet there is significant play, which makes me worry it is inside the transmission itself, and something like a numeric shift kit or rennline exactshift kit won't help? Here is a video of the play in 3rd left to right at the start of the video, then neutral, then 4th: (I can't post the video because this is my first post) I am very new to this, so I could be totally wrong about what is going on. Will a numeric shift kit fix this, or is there anything else I can do? Thanks

Can I post the video link here? loose linkage video

POST 3Original post

That was my conclusion on my 987.2 with the 6 speed. You can improve things by taking out play at the shifter and cables, but there's still some left-right play that's internal to the transmission. If you inspect the linkage as you have someone wiggle the stick back and forth in the play then you can see it.

POST 4Original post

Not sure of the ‘play’ you are referring to, but this previous poster found an issue with the linkage at the trans and if this is where your sloppiness is coming from, read up on how he tackled it. https://www.planet-9.com/threads/cayman-shifter-linkage-mod.154537/?post_id=1418361#post-1418361

I did gear oil change yesterday, it feels about 50% better now! I also sheared off a bolt on one of the aluminum diagonal arms! Yay! Everything said 48 ft lbs, so I did 48 ft lbs... Don't understand why it happened. Now I have two dangerous to drive Porsches in the span of a week! (My 718 S got rear ended a week ago, bending the back left wheel inward! ) But hey, at least shifting feels a bit better
