Suggestion

Gents , The air con only gets smelly when there is a large build up of bacteria on the evaporator surface ,this is propagated by using the air con all the time but conversely if left on permanently the evaporator surface is icy cold and you wont get the smell, Its when you run the system without the air con operating that it smells, but after a while of not using the air con the smell will go away again.

Coverage and how to read this overview

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

POST 1 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

As per title how could should it be when set to low. Should it be like article conditions or just a mild cooling effect? Cheers

POST 3 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Quite nippy then, tonight coming home it was 12 degrees outside but it felt about the same inside. I might get it regassed.

POST 4Original post

If your lucky?[ ] Have you got grills fitted Chris?.

POST 5 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

There are grills, so im thinking not a leaking condensor/rad. Also theres no pool under the front of the car. Is it worth going somewhere like kwikfit?

POST 6Original post

I think most places won't charge you if you have a leak but best ask first.

POST 7Original post

Chris, In their advertising blurb, I note that Kwik Fit say: We will replace and recharge lubricant and refrigerant levels in line with your manufacturer's recommendation. If we cannot improve the coolest vent temperature from your car by more than 10% when measured in degrees Celsius - then you pay nothing at all . By implication, they'll check the interior temperature before and after recharging. Jeff

POST 8 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Cool, ive got it booked in for sat morning, hopefully it will be warm outside to give it a proper test. £49 for kwik fit to do it.

POST 9Original post

Chris, I take it you use your AC all year round?.

POST 10 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Yes I do, I remember reading that if its not used it can degrade the system. I don't think that it reduces the mpg much.

POST 11Original post

Good good, Does amaze me when people don't use it in the winter and then wonder why they have no gas in the summer. Best of luck with yours Saturday.[ ]

POST 12Original post

If it doesn't reduce mpg and it is better for the system to be used year round I wonder why manufacturers put in an "ECO" or "A/C off" button? Is it a sop to the treehuggers? Although I confess I don't run my 100% of the time in winter I do always give it a good blast on every outing to keep the oil circulating. However, having now read deeper into the matter I will leave it on all time.[ ]

POST 13Original post

Source..? Below an outside air temperature of approx 3 degC the aircon compressor is switched off automatically. Jeff

POST 14Original post

Problem running it all the time is it will get real smelly.

POST 15Original post

Richard, I think that's why, as well as regassing, a system de-bug is advisable to clear bacterial build up from within the system, which will remove any unpleasant odours. Jeff

POST 17Original post

Gents , The air con only gets smelly when there is a large build up of bacteria on the evaporator surface ,this is propagated by using the air con all the time but conversely if left on permanently the evaporator surface is icy cold and you wont get the smell, Its when you run the system without the air con operating that it smells, but after a while of not using the air con the smell will go away again. ( the water condensing on the surface of the evaporator creating the environment for the bugs to breed. no air con operating= no water produced to grow the bugs) Spray chemicals are available to kill off the bacteria by admitting through the heating system air inlet to run over the surface of the evaporator and destroy the build up and are considered a service item these days. On most modern cars due to air con gas leakage regulations for European type approval ,the air con does not actually turn off when you press the econ/snowflake button to defeat the a/c, only reduce its output. this is because an infrequently operated a/c systems gas tight o'ring seals become less effective if the oil in the refrigerant is not carried around the system periodically and that leads to a loss of refrigerant that contravenes the level imposed by Europe. So they are less susceptible to becoming smelly as the systems always on even if you think it's off! christian...............
