Coverage and how to read this overview

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

74 eligible posts · 0 unverified posts · 1 discussions match the subject in their title or opening post.

NDA said: I recently bought a 991.1 C4S which I am enjoying.... I have a month in France coming up in June - can't wait! I hope you have many happy miles with yours - do you park it on the street? Yes I do, the main risk is careless parking, or Amazon / DPD vans etc. My C63 had 3 scrapes in that regard. Usually when parked adjacent to a driveway (ideal spot for vans). I live in a "nice" area of London, but thefts happen everywhere, a neighbour had a Skoda kodiaq thingybob (?) stolen and a friend in Dulwich village (super posh area of SE London) had his E63 stolen. I use a disklok, as do a few cars on my street, Nice car you have - 991.1 sound fantastic.

NicDale said: I wasn’t sure, I’ve got a 2 Nice choice. I think a lot of people like the 2GTS as it's wide body but 2wd. all 4WD Carrera have the light bar (so that's C4, C4s, C4 GTS, targa 4 GTS) and all C2s don't (C2, C2s, C2GTS) None of the turbo or GT models have the light bar I actually preferred the chunky light bar on the 996C4s, the thin one they have done since (997.2 onwards) I can take or leave I have never come across an aftermarket light bar. Chances are there is one out there though! Have seen all kinds of weird things like people putting 997 lights on a 996!

POST 16Original post

I picked my new one up the other weekend and absolutely love it! We had an effortless drive down from York on the Saturday and its already had 2 washes! I'm still in awe over the color and the noise is just sublime. Local blasts have been great, we're lucky to have some decent roads around and about. These are on collection day, I'm adding the GTS decals back to the sides, I currently have black and you can barely see them. I'm putting a private plate on this week as well. ] Edited by Dodgey_Rog on Wednesday 23 April 12:42 Edited by Dodgey_Rog on Wednesday 23 April 12:43

Looks like I've got a slight leak from the turbos. There's no smoke on start-up, but the Porsche Assist chap reckons it might be the turbo seals. I'm getting it recovered in this week to hopefully get it sorted quickly.... Anyone else suffered similar? To add insult to injury, this was only in the local OPC the week before, where they performed a health check and yet, didn't spot the oil leak (which looks like it's been doing it for a little while). Coincidentally, after I called the OPC, I then got the report along with the video, which won't open due to an IT technical issue.... coincidence?

My 2016 911.2 C2S w/ Powerkit just failed spectacularly with a LOT of white smoke. At this point I dont know if its Turbo(s) or the engine itself. The engine was making a very weird noise and felt like it was bouncing at the back (as if the engine mounts had snapped completely too). The rpms were very low - like 500 - and it was bad enough for the trailer guy to want to use the cable instead of driving it onto the truck. The good thing is: I do have warranty and the car has just returned from Porsche last week (for non-mechanical repairs). In January I told them about a weird noise coming from the engine and they said it was nothing... maybe it was, maybe it wasnt... Where are your bets? Engine or Turbo(s)? On the admin side, when such a thing happens, do you get an equivalent replacement car? I was planning an Eurotrip starting in about 1 month and I think we are unlikely to make it now....

I've not the white smoke and to be fair, its running fine and showing no issues whatsoever at the moment. It's currently at the local OPC awaiting attention, I don't need a car until next week so hopefully they take a look this week so I can use it when I get back to the UK on Wednesday. I'll keep you posted on what they say, its only a minor oil patch so hopefully a minor issue. As and when I get a replacement vehicle, its likely to be an Audi, BMW or Mercedes I was told. If there's a slight overlap of a day or two, maybe th dealer will give me something fun but I'm not expecting it.

You'll be lucky to get a car at all if your 911 is already at the dealer - the lead time for loaners is long. I was given a Taycan when mine went in for some warranty work and the booking (to include a loan car) was roughly a month.

Guys, are these 911’ 991.2’s that unreliable? Just started looking at getting one instead of an F Type V8 but getting cold feet already…

POST 37Original post

Apparently mines waiting for a pressure line which is what caused the oil leak. I'm also being told that one of the radiators needs replacing as well..... which is amazing seeing as this has supposedly gone through a pre-sale check, a sale check under the Porsche Approved scheme, along with the health check carried out at my local OPC. So somethings off. I land in the UK tomorrow, so I'm hopeful I'll get it back tomorrow or Thursday. All slightly annoying.

POST 41Original post

The turbos and lines are vulnerable in the 991.2 and 992. I’ve protected mine with lanoguard and have fitted an oil:air separator. It all looks clean and healthy under there, so for now it’s all good. If they go then I’ll probably upgrade them to far better than OEM. I’ve probably maintained it better than what’s typical, but we’ll soon be talking about a 10 year old vehicle, so a few bills will be expected to keep it in top notch condition.

POST 42Original post

If you book in via Porsche assistance then you should get both priority into the dealership and also a courtesy car (from Porsche GB not the dealer). I think that they are mostly Macans but they had no issue with me taking it to Europe last year when I had an issue that meant the car needed booked in.

Chaps, Peter seems like a very genuine guy. What a shame for him as it has been his dream. I’ve recently bought my dream (first) 911. I would be distraught at those kind of failures. Hopefully, he will find a solution that works for him in 911 land. I’ve just looked out of my front door and at my 911. I love the thing, I can only begin to imagine having that number of issues would be heartbreaking.

POST 44Original post

ellroy said: It s an engine out job though, not as easy just bolting them on. I should hope not for £15k. Do they use unobtanium plated turbos or something? I just can't fathom a bill like that for a pair of turbos. i understand a grand each or so, plus a couple of grand for the labour involved. I know its not comparable but Ive just bought an exchange turbo for a 2020 transit that cost £350 plus fitting, so £500 all in from my trusty mechanic. I do like the 991, but with bills like these, I will stick to my old 997. I could just about get mine rebuilt for that if/when it borescores for that kinda money.

POST 45Original post

GTS here on 21k with no issues in the last 9ish in my ownership. No idea if the issue was fixed before I bought it though so there is that. Mine is a summer/dry car for the most part so there's nothing that should really attack and corrode the pipes but there's no way on this planet I'd own it or any modern 911 without a warranty. The turbos would go the moment I didn't renew so for me at least the known issues are not an breaker although I'd be pretty annoyed if it did and I'm either stuck waiting for a recovery or without the car for months. I will say that once the depreciation balances out I won't be back to Porsche turbos. I can see why the chap in the video is annoyed - mine went back soon after I bought it as it was losing coolant - but this is the unfortunate consequence of it being cheaper to fix in after-sales than to over-engineer it during development. You can't tell me these cars go through millions of dev miles to never once see these problems. Edited by moneypits on Wednesday 18th June 16:23

Love my 991.2 GTS and have had no problems. Called Lichfield to see what they charge just out of interest and it was £7500 plus vat. That’s for 2 replacement turbos and the associated oil lines and labour. That’s Oem replacements and includes everything, so not really that bad if the worst happens.

Would going the Litchfield route cure the issue is it always going to be there with the location of the turbos?

OP here My car is at OPC Wycombe having exhaust tips clamps fitted and couple other bits as part of 111. I think of it as a spa weekend for the car. Also I discovered Marlow Hill is steep if you are looking to walk in and out of town

Also I discovered Marlow Hill is steep if you are looking to walk in and out of town I used to live in Cressex off the top of there. You did well getting up that. I went down it in an Espirt turbo many years ago as a passenger. I remember noting the dash light at he took off from the M40, "your engine light is on." Nope is was the seat belt warning as the driver, my landlord, didn't bother. "We'll be dead if we crash at this speed anyway," he said, as I saw we were already at 150. He was a knob. Good car mind.

POST 50Original post

I'm being told that both issues are outside of the warranty, so they want 2k either from me or the supplying OPC, so I've kicked it back to them. Bear in mind, there was supposed to be a pre-sale check as part of the pre-approved program, then again for pre-delivery and they even delayed delivery slightly due to a 'cracked pipe' that needed replacing. I had cruise control fitted at my local OPC and they performed a health check and missed the fluid leak and the radiator leak also. I had high hopes for Porsche ownership, but I'll be honest, this isn't the best start. I'm knocking about in a Porsche Assist Macan at the moment, but that's only for 5 days. What's more annoying is that I was looking forward to driving it in this week before I head back to the states, otherwise I won't be able to use it until late July. Yours, annoyed from Essex.

POST 54Original post

A friend of mine recently bought a 991.2 and had the turbos go after about a month. The OPC did it all under warranty but said they know it's an issue but they only have a certain budget to prep the car for resale and therefore it's not done as part of the pre sales prep. When the owner then brings it in as the warranty is under a different policy/company they are happy to do the rectification work against the warranty policy - seems wrong to me!

POST 55Original post

When I was researching which 911 to buy, I chose a 991.1 as the turbo woes on the .2 seem to happen a lot.

There's been some back and forth between my local OPC and the OPC I purchased it from; they seem to have sorted it out between them. I'm a little annoyed as I didn't get to use it this last trip. I'm going to have to wait until late July now as I'm away traveling with work again.

Francis , you have been watching petrolpeds video.

I was considering a 991 turbo and he warned me not to own one outside of the Porsche warranty. It was a case of not if but when the turbos would leak and the costs are frightening. I stuck with my 991.1.

There is that argument, but I love the thing so much, its such a great spec and I love the drive, I'm planning on keeping it. There's a slight disagreement currently on who's footing the bill for the issues, and no one seems keen to resolve it quickly. Depending on the outcome over the next day or so will determine whether or not I get onto Porsche Customer Services, as it seems a bit of a piss take currently. I can't believe the number of 'inspections' and 'checks' and it's a "oh well..." attitude from the supplying dealer. I'm looking to getting it resolved quickly, so I can start enjoying it again....... in 4 weeks! As a side note, does anyone have any good recommendations for the front air intake grills? As in retrofit? I want to reduce the amount of crap that goes into the front rads as it seems they collect alot of rubbish.

Design 911 sell the Zunsport grills - they are a must have and were the first upgrade on my 991.1 - https://www.design911.co.uk/b/zunsport/4/

Get them direct from Zunnsport. There’s normally a discount available.

I have a spare set of .2 GTS Zunsport grills unless I'm a little later seeing this - free to you if you need them. Used of course but they're fine. I ordered new ones when I bought mine only to realise it had some on it already when it got delivered. If anyone else with a GTS needs some just message me.

Car is back from OPC and I have extended warranty to Aug 27. Also took Assist. They told me I didn't actually need the 111 point check so have not charged me for it, but it's nice to have it done. Maybe Invictus never took ownership of the vehicle, so it counted as a private purchase? Impressed with Wycombe. Good comms. Had a few couple of nice 992 GT3 there.

POST 66Original post

I would extend warranty as long as you have the car each year until you either get rid or they won’t allow it. Worth it for the peace of mind.

The warranty works out to be about £90 a month and it is bumper to bumper. IMO it is the best car warranty on the market. I am about to have my 13yr 991 have the PCM replaced because the Bluetooth keeps dropping.

Out of curiosity, how was the prep on the car by Invictus? My friend was looking at a 911 from there, but they'd done nothing to the car and couldn't answer any questions on it when we looked at one in December. They also wanted a non-refundable deposit to test drive it, which was new to us. He ended up spending 15k more for a nicer car from his local OPC, purely for the warranty.

OPC picked up issues with exhaust clamps (I have PSE, not sure what diff that makes but obviously it's the centre style) But then it was 55k and the next one was 62k no probably balanced out No advisories on MOT, which doesn't tally with the tyres Had 5 months warranty left and I purchased 2 years so I have now have 27 months warranty which is nice Sticking to OPC going forward. Impressed with Wycombe. That hill though! Yeah fingured as much, that initial experience didn't inspire us with confidence. I saw your note about the hill in one of your previous posts..... haha I have 4 and a bit weeks until I can get behind the wheel on mine. I seriously can't wait.

Hello all Just a quick update on my situation. Picked up the car after nearly 3 weeks. Long story short: - They only changed spark plugs and cleaned air intakes and car became fine — I find it super weird because spark plugs were changed last September just 4kkms ago - they did say they were also suspicious that the engine was pop when they saw the smoke, and gave me the impression that they called Porsche for them to allow them to do more stuff in a preventive way but they didn’t allow because de facto engine was running fine without further evidence They sent me away and offered to check the car on a ramp before I go on my euro trip (in less than 2 weeks). I will need to try and get the car tested. I am a little bit like that guy from the video: will it happen again? Will I ever trust the car completely? It’s silly, but it does make one feel weird… As for customer service, they did give me a replacement car for 5 days (a very nice Taycan) but then called to ask for it back if I could (was getting to expensive for them). PS: already wrote to the current owner of my previous immaculate 997.1 - slight regret selling it…

POST 72Original post

They suggested the white smoke was plugs and dirty intakes?

POST 73Original post

moneypits said: They suggested the white smoke was plugs and dirty intakes? Well, they said they saw error for injection system so they started with the basic and problem went away. I will try the car “as it should” and honestly prepared for something worst to happen. They cannot seem to do more to get covered by mother Porsche if the car is running as of “now”. Unfortunately I am sure it will be back.

POST 74Original post

Fair enough and I can see their side if that’s the case. Give the car hell, enjoy it and keep the Porsche assist number to hand. Alternatively a private look at a respected independent may also make you more comfortable taking it on longer trips.
