A friend's 987 and he gets this "once in awhile." We suspect this is the LCD going bad as I have never seen this before...any thoughts / insights?
I'm afraid so,
@Hoster987
- I think that's likely going to require replacement. Unclear for the depth of repairs required (I'm guessing a recoding of the instrument cluster and mileage correction), but there may be places that refresh these sorts of things. Also, it may require a Euro vs US set up given that's in km/hr -- I couldn't say.
Unfortunate.
As far as the km/hr, I believe you can simply change that in the dash settings menu. I think there's a Units menu or something like that. Explore the options above the Oil level check.
Per units, if just replacing that screen, that's likely not a problem. But if replacing much of the instrument cluster, the units will be different. Just be careful before buying any replacements.
This corruption of the center screen has been reported one or more times before. I think at least one got cleared up by itself after disconnecting the battery. Seems like it might of been corrupted memory in the display. Sorry I don't remember the details and I haven't searched. Just thought I'd mention that it's been addressed here previously.

's idea, I'd suggest to your friend that they disconnect the battery for 24-48 hours to let any remaining juice drain out in the car. Maybe he'll get lucky and it'll go away -- at least that's a free option to try.
I don't believe disconnecting the battery will have any good effect, but if it makes your friend feel like he's doing "something" it certainly shouldn't hurt anything (just don't close the frunk lid with the battery disconnected..)
This has been reported several times. It seems to be reported to happen generally in hot weather.
It is the actual display element that's exhibiting the "worm" sort of thing. There are replacement display elements, and somewhere here on Planet-9 there is a thread about it (a Google search of our site should turn it up).. no one I remember reported doing the replacement element installation. Most people simply ignored it (and some were much worse than the one shown)..
The fix seemed to be benign neglect - they ignored it -- and eventually it went away. If I had the issue, I'm sure my OCD would be urging me to "fix it", while my lazy old guy attitude would say "let's see if it gets better.."
Let us know what the outcome is..
It is possible to replace the LCD ‘ribbon’ display, although it seems best left to those specialized in that skill, close to being a watchmaker. I have had work done on my instrument display using Speedometer Solutions, at speedosolutions.com. The owner's name is Tom. One would need to remove the display, pack it securely and ship it to him. The clip below shows what involved in this repair.
i did encounter this issue before and like don said, usually the worm or corruption, is not "removable" - in my case, I had to have the LCD replaced by a specialist repair shop.
in my case, seeing it every time I drove, irritated me... lol...
