Explicit resolution reports before identified causes, performed actions and suggestions. Within each level, matching component labels precede direct query mentions and inherited thread context; successful versus unsuccessful discussion counts, owner confirmations and independent discussion support determine order. This is not a probability of success.

All fuses were also checked, got to the DME and based on the puddle it was sitting in I think I found the problem.

What is normally the procedure once these items are in for repair, timeframe etc?

By me having it out does there need to be a reset of the keys?

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

I just bought this car from a private party in NJ. I washed the car last Friday and it started right up after the wash. On Saturday the car wouldnt start. I have read where this has happened to a lot of owners of the 996 engines. Biggest question is where is the location of the distributor cap? The car turns over but wont catch, possible water in the distributor? Thanks for your help and I'm happy to be a new member of the Porsche family. 2001 Porsche Carrera 911 Cabriolet.
There is no distributor cap. The car has individual coil paks at each spark plug.
I’ve had a same generation 996 with no issue after washing. Never heard that one before.
Could be crank position sensor.

See the 2nd or 3rd image on the attachment. There are Tech articles for each model at the Pelican Porsche home page. That's where this came from.
Do you have a second ignition key? If you do, try it. Is your battery fully charged?
Key, ignition, immobilizer and engine mgmt all work off they key code.
Just tried both keys and no tach movement. I also had the battery out after I washed the car to get to the area around and under the battery. By me having it out does there need to be a reset of the keys?
When you were cleaning under the battery you didn’t knock any fuel pump wires off did you?
You will also probably have to re-teach the window limits to get auto up down working. Window down, hold 10 seconds, up same should do it.
Try posting Q here too.

Finally got to the DME and it was wet. So I will be sending the unit out with the keys and immobilizer. Is there a go to company that does this, does Pelican do this? What is normally the procedure once these items are in for repair, timeframe etc? Thank you everyone I learned a lot about this car in 1 month...
Radio code re-entered and works fine. All fuses were also checked, got to the DME and based on the puddle it was sitting in I think I found the problem.
Good job. Now you need to determine where the water came from. Cab's have a drainage system that, if clogged, can spill water into the car and it gets under the seats, where key electronic equipment is! Not ideal.
If you're in NJ, you might want to try PowerTech. They have a great reputation and support a lot of PCA activity and track events.
Kieth and Mike will probably send it to ECU doctors or someone similar.

Well we got her started turned out the previous owner had added some sort of a enhancement device that once removed the car fired up and is running fine. I didn’t cut any of the harness used to rig up this device I just tucked it into the carpet after taping it together.
