Coverage and how to read this overview

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

Hi folks, I have a 2003 c2 which has the most annoying rattle. It sounds a little like teeth chattering behind my ear! If I put a little pressure against the rear window then it stops (until I release) and if I also hold the rear roof lining the rattle goes. I tried putting something between the rear window and lining to apply the pressure but that doesn't work.... The therapy to help me get through long drives is getting expensive!! It seems to be worse in cold weather... Any ideas? Mark

Not intimately familiar with 996 but hazarding a guess... Any sign or knowledge of a window ever being replaced? I ask because if the car has ever had a window smashed the tiny pieces can get caught inside. This is most common on door windows and it sounds like it the rear?? Have you had someone else drive and pinpointed the exact location, altho sounds like you've found it by applying the pressure. If its in the lining is it worth passing a magnet over the area in case its a loose screw? Then you may be able to direct it to somewhere either it stops moving or you can actually remove it. The last thing you want to have to do is remove an lining as I'd imagine its hard to get it back perfectly. Hopefully this helps!

It could be the same as mine... There is a rod that stretches across the roof to tension the headlining and make it curve upwards rather than sag in the middle. This rod is sort of sprung into little cups at either end (sides of the car above the rear quarter windows). The problem is that the cups are too little and if you accidentally push on the headlining it can pop the end out of its cup, then it rattles like mad! First time it did it on mine I managed to pinch it through the material and get it back, but the next time, the other end came out as well and I can't relocate it... Only solution I'm told is to drop the whole headlining  So I've learned to live with it...

OK , it isn't caught glass and it isn't the rod as I have checked that too! Porsche Guildford had a crack at it in February and put some 'tape' under the roof-lining (I was expecting more for £200) to stop it. That worked in the warm weather but now exactly the same noise. It is definitely something to do with the window because if I push my thumb against the window without touching anything else it goes away. The confusing thing is that if I put enough pressure on the back of the headlining then the same result. So, I though I would 'pack' the gap between the two with something that splits the two and holds them firm but that has no effect. Looks like more money going to an OPC when I try to argue they didn't fix it the first time....I hate going to OPC Guildford :x Anyway - thanks for the responses

coblat I have the same problem and just started turning the music up to drone it out. I have no idea but will look to see of it is the rear window. I had an inspection check and they noticed a crecking from the front window which is common on the 996 which I have and said it just needed titanium tape round the window to stop it, it may well work for the rear but will find out when it goes in for a service in 2 months time
