Coverage and how to read this overview

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

6 eligible posts · 0 unverified posts · 1 discussions match the subject in their title or opening post.

POST 1 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Does anyone have any thought about using replica alloy 18" wheels. Seems quite a mad thought to me, but I'm prepared to be convinced otherwise! Especially when driving around at 150mph+ on non-OEM wheels...and not sure if the warranty would be a problem?

POST 2 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Does anyone have any views on this? Really like the Carrera wheel and lots of replica versions on ebay. I'm thinking that I'm going to hold out for genuine refurbed.

POST 3Original post

I`m having the same dilemma at the moment. I currently have GT3 Sport Designs and am looking for a simpler wheel like the Carrera. The rims of mine collect water where the wheel joins the rim and spoils them. Haven`t really thought about the safety aspect of the copied wheels before. Are they not made the same way to the same standards ?? Perhaps by the same people ?? Steve

POST 4Original post

I once bought some 17" VW replica wheels for a Golf GTI MkIV some years ago. Big mistake!!! Even though they looked exactly the same as original VW 17" alloys, they were heavy at 21kg a corner (5kg heavier than the 16" items I was replacing them with). Once fitted, the handling was all screwed up, the acceleration was blunted (conversely took longer to brake), turn-in was also blunted, they caused the mpg to decrease and to boot, they started corroding about a year afterwards! The only benefit was the car looked great - when parked! If you are looking at replicas, consider their weight above anything else as an increased unsprung weight will have a bearing on all of the above. I'd always go for refurbed originals if brand-new originals are out of reach. IMO of course. ~ Maxie

POST 5Original post

I have to agree with Maxie, I fitted a set of fairly expensive turbo twist replicas to my 993. Bad move! They may have looked full on like the originals but the flanges were so thick that the protection bead on the sidewall was completely useless. They were also a lot heavier. In the end I found a set of reasonably undamaged hollow spokes, had them properly refurbished and the car drives and handles far better now. I could feel the difference!

POST 6 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Thanks for all the replies. I'll look out for some second hand originals.
