Porsche has a software option for this and apparently disconnecting the sensor on the 987 will default to manual speed adjustment as well (with a warning message displayed at startup).
Leading evidence: 'Use contact cement' (no explicit attributable resolution; this is a reported action or suggestion). Across 1 matching discussions, The most frequently discussed action is 'Disconnect sensor' (1 discussions). For that action, 0 discussions report a resolution and 0 report an unsuccessful attempt. No action has an explicit, attributable resolution report under the current rules. These are forum reports and suggestions, not a confirmed diagnosis.

In the past I have used contact cement aka shoe glue for auto mirrors.

But it's only a minor inconvenience and I'm not about to pay the dealer $$$ for the software option that bypasses the rain sensor when this doesn't change the functionality of my wipers.
Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

Though it worked flawlessly at the different sensitivity levels driving in the rain today.
I have scoured the internet for 987 (with rain sensor) rear view mirror adhesive with no luck.
Everyone suggests LockTite or
Permatex
, but I tried these and they do not hold. The problem is that the metal disc has a very thin ridge that doesn't provide a large contact surface with the glass. It appears as if there should be a 1mm thick adhesive tape that could be used, but I can't find anything... Links or suggestions?
I discovered that the previous owner had unloaded an entire tube of epoxy to hold the mirror in place. They covered the rain sensor as well, which explains why it has never worked. So I have no point of reference for how the metal disc is supposed to be held in place.
3m makes a super sticky 2 sided adhesive tape in 1/4 or 3/8ths width that may work.
In the past I have used contact cement aka shoe glue for auto mirrors.
I have some 100lb 3M VHB and it won't hold a mirror at all. I'll look into contact cement options, hadn't thought of that.
I'm just baffled I can't find the factory adhesive. What are windshield companies using? It's such a specific design for the 987 w/ rain sensor.
I used contact cement on an outside mirror that fell off the
Z4
.
It's been holding fast and steady for a long time now.
There are some 2 part epoxy for glass that come in a 2 cylinder self mixing dispenser.
JB and Gorrilla come to mind.
Take it to your local Safelite auto glass shop. Odds are very high they will glue this on for you for free, using their pro-grade adhesives. I've been to a couple of different Safelites and they both have done this service, gratis. I suspect they do this to garner goodwill and future customers for when the bigger jobs are needed.
Exactly what I was gonna suggest. These guys do this day-in/day-out for a living. There is a good chance that using the wrong adhesive on it will cause the rain-sensor on it to screw up as you've learned. Question is - is the rain-sensor salvageable or should you be looking for an entirely new mirror assembly...
I had no problems with
Black RTV
holding mine back on when I repaired it. I don't recall the ridge that well, but I did not modify the piece at all (sand it flat or whatever) before re-installing. Put enough
RTV
on it and it will bridge that gap fine. If you're that worried about it, sand it flat for a better surface and use a more conventional mirror adhesive. As for the rain sensor pad, buy it at an
Audi
dealership - same part, something like 1/3 the cost. I know when I tried to get Safelite to do it, they wouldn't touch it, so it was either shell out for a new windshield, or figure it out. I had no problems with the fix holding up for the 1.5 years I owned the car after the repair, and most of that was in the AZ heat.

Help... Rearview mirror fell off
Can't modify the ridge because the spacing is set for the rain sensor. If it's any closure or further from the glass, then it won't function properly.
I did get the rain sensor gel for an
Audi
off
Amazon
for like $6.
Porsche
wanted $45. Ha!
The
JB weld
putty seems to be holding so far.
I'm not sure if I pinched a wire putting the mirror back up, but I got an error that the rain sensor was fault. Though it worked flawlessly at the different sensitivity levels driving in the rain today. So who knows, maybe just a hiccup.
Maybe it is just showing the fault because it was disconnected and the car was on. The airbags will also do that. Have you tried to clear the fault with a Durametric or equivalent?
I had the dealer replace the windshield on my used 2016
GTS
before I took delivery. The rain sensor has not been sensitive enough in mist or light rain since I got the car. Does anyone know what the sensor senses? Is it a "camera" which "sees" water droplet distortion on the windshield, or some other method?
Sorry, I missed the notifications on this thread.
I cleared the fault code but it came right back. Perhaps I disconnected or pinched a wire.
BUT, the switch on the wiper stalk now adjusts for varying speeds, just like Porsches without rain sensors. So at least I have variable wiper options now, which is all I wanted. No more choosing between manually activating the wipers for each pass or going full tilt.
The only annoyance is having to clear the fault message on the gauge cluster when starting the car. But it's only a minor inconvenience and I'm not about to pay the dealer $$$ for the software option that bypasses the rain sensor when this doesn't change the functionality of my wipers.
You could call it a camera. It's a sensor that is looking for changes in opacity, with the switch on the wiper stalk determining the level of sensitivity. If there's smudges on the outside of the windshield around the sensor or the little gel button piece is not making smooth contact between the sensor and the inside of the windshield, then the wipers won't function as they should.
Truth be told, I've never even driven a 2020 car that had a rain sensor that functioned as they should. I prefer being able to choose the wiper speed myself. Porsche has a software option for this and apparently disconnecting the sensor on the 987 will default to manual speed adjustment as well (with a warning message displayed at startup).
I've had great results with
3M tape
products on other things.
But it would not work for a 987 w/ rain sensor mirror due to the curvature of the button. It would also discourage any sort of tape with a rain sensor setup because even 1mm in thickness would be enough to prevent the sensor from getting proper contact with the windshield.
When I did this repair (another thread, with pictures) I used this
Amazon.com: SYCOOVEN Rain Sensor Gel Pad Auto Rain Sensor Replacement Pad Car Windshield Replacement Film Silicone Adhesive Pad for Most Cars(Size:Common) : Automotive
and cut it to size.
There are two different parts to this. The rain sensor gel pad, and the adhesive to attach the lock ring. This thread has all the details on how to do this.
https://www.planet-9.com/threads/help-rearview-mirror-fell-off.74230
The gel pad is not strong enough to be used to glue the mirror to the windshield, it's just provides the connectivity for the sensor in the mirror housing to the windshield.
I used permatex as the glue for the lock ring.
As for the gel pad, as I mentioned above you can buy a generic pad and cut it to size, or get a round one for an Audi. I had once found both on Amazon, but the round one that I had found is not available anymore.
