Really though their biggest issue was originally the fact of water cooling but I don't see any now saying the 959, GT2/3 (water cooled ofc) or any other of the more recent 911s are aweful cars so they are just left with the headlights which I love because they are from the GT1 and the minor interior quality failings.
Leading evidence: 'originally the fact of water cooling' (1 discussions report identifying this cause; no attributable repair resolution). Across 1 matching discussions, the most frequently mentioned possible cause is 'originally the fact of water cooling' (1 discussions; 1 report identifying it and 0 suggest it). The most frequently discussed action is 'Clean shut lines and my favourite headlights (996.2)' (1 discussions). For that action, 0 discussions report a resolution and 0 report an unsuccessful attempt. No action has an explicit, attributable resolution report under the current rules. These are forum reports and suggestions, not a confirmed diagnosis.

These are separate views of the same evidence. Frequency alone does not establish a fix, and these counts must not be added together.

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

...anyone making statements that the 996 is ugly must be blind...just look at it...a timeless shape with simply beautiful lines :worship:
Yep, I think they're great.
If any other car maker had released the 996 there'd be no issue and people would love them. It's only because they were compared to the round headlight cars that people had a fit. It's old news now.
I'm onto my 3rd and they're not just great cars, but great 911s.
Doing the tripod, parked at Silvretta pass.
Just realised they're all from the side/back. Better include 'those" lights then.
Early morning at the Grossglockner pass.
...wife and I will drive across Dartmoor for a run this afternoon leading to a Devon cream tea at the Two Bridges Hotel ...
...only problem is if I exceed 40 she twitters on about sheep and speed limits
I've only had positive comments from the public (non-air cooled owners) on mine. The 996 has such clean shut lines and my favourite headlights (996.2).
I do think that if the air-cooled lot didn't slate the 996, Porsche would have been more bold in their designs post 996.
Other than Pinky, I can't think of the last time anybody commented on one of my 996s. My most commonly commented-on car is probably my R107.
A standard 996 is very much under the radar. I like that.

They are just jealous that the 996 is better in pretty much every way but they paid far far more :floor:

Time they finally shut up and admitted that the 996 was the savour of the 911, that all newer 911s are based from it and the old aircooleds are cool history but no more.
I did a video about the Carrera M96 engine design, I found it very interesting to see how much of the design or the aircooled engines was carried over but the parts count was massively reduced and the design simplified. Some sections removed like the dual scavenge pumps, which came back to bite them. Combining the block, cylinder carrier and cylinders to a single unit, and the heads and cam carriers to another, plus cam holders in the cam cover helped to reduce parts count massively at rhe cost of serviceability. When a set of pistons and cylinders for a 997 3.8l GT3 is about £12k it isn't a cheap alternative any more!!
As for the headlights. The only 911 version where all lights are in a single unit which is very easy to swap out. Great design. I was never a fan of the golfball in the cheeks look of the later cars. I prefer the 996.1 over the 996.2
