Reported cause

It's not a complex job but main issue is access space and time required as you need to remove the TC, which involves lowering the engine down and some of the struts and tilting gearbox down to gain access to the top of the TC.

Coverage and how to read this overview

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

4 eligible posts · 0 unverified posts · 1 discussions match the subject in their title or opening post.

1 acknowledgements have no verified action link; they do not establish a repair result.

POST 1 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Hi all, I hardly ever post (apologies) but was looking for some help. I have a 2002 Turbo tip. Last year it had the engine/transmission gasket replaced along with the transmission mounts. Since then (over 12m) the car has been faultless (no leaks, perfect shifts). Recently it had a service and has developed a weep/leak on the transmission sump. Had the sump gasket replaced but it is still weeping from somewhere. Does anyone have any ideas of usual problems in this area or ideally a recommendation of a specialist in this area (based in the Midlands/Warwickshire) Thanks in advance! John

POST 2Original post

The 722.6 Mercedes box, which yours basically is, did suffer from leaks from the main electrical connector to the gearbox (I think MB refer to it as the pilot bush). It could be worth checking there.

POST 3Original post

Mine developed a leak between the transfer case and the gearbox, after I'd had the engine and gearbox out. This took a while to locate as it's well hidden. Initially I thought it was the gearbox sump gasket was leaking so I changed that along with the filter only to find that didn't fix the leak. There's a small alloy tube/connector which has an o-ring on either end. You need to clean up the area at the bottom of the TC and gearbox to see the leak. It's not a complex job but main issue is access space and time required as you need to remove the TC, which involves lowering the engine down and some of the struts and tilting gearbox down to gain access to the top of the TC. It could be done on axel stands but better to have access to a lift.

POST 4 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Thanks both, I am wondering if it is the electrical link that might be cause of the leak, would be disappointing if the transmission mount renewal and engine/transmission gasket had failed already.
