Explicit resolution reports before identified causes, performed actions and suggestions. Within each level, matching component labels precede direct query mentions and inherited thread context; successful versus unsuccessful discussion counts, owner confirmations and independent discussion support determine order. This is not a probability of success.

Some are using tape IIRC and some are replacing the part which obviously costs more.

These are separate views of the same evidence. Frequency alone does not establish a fix, and these counts must not be added together.

Coverage and how to read this overview

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

6 eligible posts · 0 unverified posts · 1 discussions match the subject in their title or opening post.

  • Rennlist: 1 discussions

0 evidence records excluded for query context · 0 excluded by outcome qualification · 0 adjusted by outcome qualification.

0 acknowledgements have no verified action link; they do not establish a repair result.

POST 1 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Want to get this out asap have not searched yet. My GF's 99 996 cabriolet has an issue........intermittently when she brakes the horn sounds with a lower than normal volume/voltage. Can't find any relation to anything other than the brake lights coming on. Also the wiring diagrams show a two tone horn circuit yet the owner manual doesn't mention this, probably doesn't matter in troubleshooting this ????? If u have solved this problem please reply with your resolution. TIA

POST 2Original post

this is a common problem, I forget the exact name of the part inside the steering wheel that causes it, but basically there is a spring that becomes weak over time and allows the contacts to touch without pushing on the horn itself. There are several threads on how to "Fix" or "replace" this part. Some are using tape IIRC and some are replacing the part which obviously costs more. Someone will pop in with the names and a link or two for the job. Are you a Renntech memeber too? That might help as that is where I saw most of the info. Here is the link LINT to Renntech for the Fix

POST 3Original post

Here is the link to the DIY on Renntech. As Ed mentioned, you have to be a Member on Renntech to view this link, but the money saved on this fix alone will more than pay for the Membership (donation). RennTech Horn Problem

POST 4Original post

I have nothing of value to add to this thread, but the scene(s) in Little Miss Sunshine when this problem happens to the VW Bus are hilarious.

POST 5 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

I love these DIY sites, great info from everyone. THANKS

+1 Way back when I took drivers ed we had a classmate that would always hit the horn when turning. We finally just started waving to people during the turns.

This is a source reference. Confirm exact model applicability in the original material.
