Coverage and how to read this overview

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

9 eligible posts · 0 unverified posts · 1 discussions match the subject in their title or opening post.

POST 1 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

I have a 2004 996 Convertible I suspect I'm having a heat exchanger leak (I'm losing fluid with no leak in the back of the car at all and when I turn on the heat, my window fogs up and the car smells a bit like coolant). While taking everything apart, I found this tube not connected to anything and can't find anything that it would plug into. I comes from the corner of the passenger side behind an A/C hard line. It's not for the wiper fluid...I found that line and they other ends that go to the sprayers are connected. What is it and where does it go? 2478CC14-D0A5-46FF-AEAB-46560A7639C7_zpsfzdm0zvn.jpg

POST 2Original post

Battery vent line/overflow tube. Drains to outside.

POST 4Original post

Battery vent as said, or possibly the evaporator tray drain for condensation. If you are getting fog in the cabin, there may be water in the tray and the port is plugged, but that doesn't explain your loss of coolant. Check your oil carefully, and remove the oil fill cap and check for froth.

POST 5 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Thanks guys. Just did a search for battery vent tube and saw a picture of it. I will check the oil too. The smell of coolant inside the car is pretty strong, so I'm thinking that I have a leak in the core and it's causing the window to fog up quickly (and it doesn't wipe off easily which leads me to believe it's not just condensation, but the coolant itself).

It could be that you small the battery fumes. Are you missing coolant from the reservoir?

POST 7Original post

For a leak get the spectroline / tracerline infrared dye kit ($50 ish) If you have a C4S they commonly leak at the joint between the plastic cap and the core of the radiator. Smelling coolant to me sounds like it's getting baked off somewhere, but I bet it's just simple leak. I did the above and found a large leak on one side and a small one on the other. They seem to fail at the same time. Good luck!

POST 9Original post

Either battery vent, or you just pulled a spark plug wire off. Cylinder #7.
