Then I said I was quoted £350 for a clutch by service dept, they guy checked & now my car is booked to have the rms done for £350.

Should have done the 111 check before how stupid am I?

Congratulations on the car (even though you may feel a little overwhelmed by the 111-point check findings(!))

I would have expected any decent indi to rectify these, although, of course, it would have been better to purchase subject to a satisfactory 111 point check first.

OPC been saying £535 not a penny less but today I called the parts dept for a clutch while on the phone I asked if they knew a decent specialist as I been qouted £350 to change the clutch.
Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

Hi all,
Just purchased a 996 cab on an 02 covered 55k with fpsh serviced last week.Purchased it from indi dealer.just had my 111 cheak done at opc they say I have a lower seal oil leak and are willing to pay for parts and 50% labour cost as good will leaving me to pay £535 also my clutch is a bit hard recom maybe change at the same time. My front brakes make a "clonk" they say it could mass dampers? what shall I do? Should have done the 111 check before how stupid am I? My mate had his c4s done today and they said pretty much same thing but he has got warrenty so leak fixed foc.[

Welcome Atik!!
I assume you mean the Rear Main Oil Seal which is a fairly common problem on these cars. You don't say if your car is C2 or C4, but either way it doesn't sound like the OPC is doing you much of a favour. The book time for an RMS is about 5 hours, plus a £10 seal. Find yourself a good independent and save a couple of hundred quid. It makes sense to change the clutch at the same time, as there is no extra labour content. A heavy pedal is a sure sign of a worn clutch.
A clonk from the brakes would worry me. What are the circumstances when it happens?
Sorry its a c2 cab. The clonk noise is coming from the front brakes when pressed. opc say it is the brake dampers possibly, nothing to be majorly concerend about but I dont know. What shall I do? Has anyone else had these problems? With regards to the oil leak how much would an indy charge any ideas? Opc want £535 as 50% labour?shall I do it now or wait untill clutch gone before fixing oil seal? Would it cause more problems if I wait? I have to tell opc by monday.
Thank you
Welcome Atik,
Congratulations on the car (even though you may feel a little overwhelmed by the 111-point check findings(!))
50% of OPC labour charges should be similar costs to an independent. It sounds like the OPC is quoting more hours than the book job as Richard has mentioned. Suggest to them that you believe the book job to be 5 hours for a RMS change and see where the difference is.
I don't know of an indie in East London; my one is in West London. PM me if you would like his details. There is a list in the R20 region (London region) - you could check there as well.
Waiting on changing the RMS depends on how much you want the warranty or the piece of mind a warranty gives, assuming this is why you wanted it? Richard will correct me if I'm wrong but if you don't change the RMS, the only 'damage' is financial, namely the amount of oil you have to replace to keep the levels topped up
One thing if you give the work to the OPC for the RMS and want the warranty, ensure as part of the work that they don't try to charge you again for the 111-point check to get the warranty. It varies from OPC to OPC but some say they have to reinspect the car if the remedial work is not carried out by them*. The check is only labour charge and there are other OPCs who often waive the cost if a service / other major work is undertaken at the time.
Hope this helps.

*edited to add: I've just re-read your post, are they quoting you for labour time on fixing the brake 'clonk' or is this additional?
one further thought - have you approached the indie (from where you bought the car) to see what they might do about the RMS and brake 'clonk'? an arrangement might be possible. many independents have reputations that they want to maintain and so may surprise you.

Thank you guys,
The clonk will not be looked at for the £535. This is only for rms & opc are saying its a 7 hr job? If they do the work than I won't have to pay again for the 111. Really dont know what to do, stuck between a 996 & my wallet. Surely I should be able to take the car dealer to court? selling me a car with defects?
Sorry just saw you're reply. Tried the indy but he's saying his 3 month warrenty is for engine & electrics & RMS is a common problem & brake & clutch is wear & tear. He's peeing me off, if by monday I cannot get this sorted I will name and shame him. He's selling alot of expensive cars lets hope he cares about reputation. I paid the deposit by credit card so I hoping I can recover this back. Picked the car up on wednesday got the 111 on friday so I should be covered?
I've attached the book times. 3.5 hous to remove the transmission, plus 1.4 hours to change the seal. I would have thought that an independent would charge around £300-350 to do the same job (add £360 for a genuine Porsche clutch). I would ask the OPC if they would accept a receipt (showing that genuine parts had been used) from an independent specialist as evidence that the work had been completed and allow you to take out the warranty. As for the brakes, it sounds like they don't really know, so it could be a simple matter of damper pads, which are £15.03 +VAT each. Again, I'd get an indy to sort that out too.
SNDa is correct that the RMS is, at worst, a nuisance. I doubt wether you would even need to top up the oil because of it. Most people put up with the odd drip on the garage floor until the clutch needs changing.
Thanks Richard
I'l speak to OPC & decide what to do. As for the dampers am I right in thinking they go behind the brake pads? How many dampers on each side? I Think I might have a go at changing them I used to work on my M3 changing the pads & disks. Never come across dampers before or I did not know they were dampers. This very depressing I thought I would get at least 1 yrs hassle free motoring with this 996.
I'm not sure if it's the mass dampers. They're also called anti-squeal shims
and as the name suggests that's what they do. I recently put a new set on to avoid
a squeal and with a bit of copperslip they did the job well. Maybe u have binding pistons?
The dampers come in a pack of 4 for one corner (2 per pad)
Who is the indi you bought it from ? I would have expected any decent indi to rectify these, although, of course, it would have been better to purchase subject to a satisfactory 111 point check first.
My car in going in for a RMS on wednesday at a OPC.
They are charging me £388, this is 100% off for the part and 70% off for the labour. They said it is for good will from HQ. It may be worth your while to ring around different OPC's and see if any are willing to help out.
Hi tirfor
what year porsche is it? I say this because a car thats just over 2 years old and out of warrenty opc tend to do the rms for free in some cases & which opc? I'll try to find a different opc maybe
And it's a much bigger job on a tiptronic, as they have to remove the engine and gearbox. On a manual only the gearbox has to come out. Sounds like you got a real result there Kully!
News flash!
OPC been saying £535 not a penny less but today I called the parts dept for a clutch while on the phone I asked if they knew a decent specialist as I been qouted £350 to change the clutch. Parts then said let me check with service hey prestoe they can do it for £350. So I went to opc asked if they can do the RMS cheaper answer, no. Okay whats the difference between clutch labour and rms labour? Reply no much difference. Then I said I was quoted £350 for a clutch by service dept, they guy checked & now my car is booked to have the rms done for £350. What a load of S***. Maybe we should have a new thread about the most shocking OPC.
On the subject of the RMS I think I may need mine replaced on my 02 C4S: took the car out the garage after it had been parked in there for a few days and there was a v small patch of oil on the ground. Exact location was slightly left of center (standing at the rear facing forward) and at rear of the car. Sh*t myself when I saw it!
Can anyoe confirm that it is likely to be the RMS? Will the oil just need topped up a little until I get it checked or is there a risk that something worse could develop??
Only other thing is that the Oil Failure Indicator warning light comes on randomly but my OPC has already confirmed in the past that the fault code means it is an instrument cluster failure so I am sure that not related.... Bit hacked off at all this as they wont be cheap to fix (no warranty) but damn its a fine car anyway!!!
Shame you don't have the warrantee. As far as I have read, the RMS leak is non-critical and could be left till you need the clutch doing - then its very low cost instead of the £600+ to do it on its own. As for the instrument cluster, there was another thread on here recently which mentioned about £1000 for a replacement.
PS. Like your nickname ...ready for the next 911.
