Hello! so, here is my saga. 06
Boxster S
, had wet rear BCM. i replaced it with a used newer version with part # ending in "08", and it worked fine for a week or two. then, it threw ABS/
PCM
faults upon start up. i messed with my
Foxwell
, but couldnt make any headway, only succeeded in killing the top operation, lol . it gives codes for "coding incorrect". took to the local dealer, paid an hour labor(!) for them to get the top operational again, but then told me it would require another hour labor (280) for them to "try and figure it out". i skipped that, bought a
Durametric Pro
, but i cant seem to get it lined out still. it says "version incorrect", and in the drop down menu, it doesnt list any 987 car, only various versions of the 997 cars. any suggestions?
Tough decision - leave this here or move it to the diagnostics discussion area. For now - I'll leave it here.
The 987 and 997 share a lot of parts - including the body control modules. They apparently leave the factory programmed to the model they're in. One difference in a 997 and 987 top is the 997 has an automatic electronic latch, we have the manual one (which I prefer - but we won't go into why right here..)
I'm sure the
Durametric Pro
has the option to do a dealer "handover" - which is done at the dealers when the car is ready to be delivered to the customer. When the car leaves the factory some things on it are restricted - I think to keep delivery people honest and not playing with the goods they are delivering. The handover sets everything to the default settings programmed in at the factory. That might restore your top operation. I'm not sure (since I don't own one) how the module determines the top is fully closed and latched - I suspect the switch in the header that the hook for the latch activates when the latch is closed. That switch puts the windows up on closing, they drop down as you start moving the top to close it. Same thing on opening. I can see where they could share that switch and confirmation that the top is fully closed so the two BCM's should be compatible.
Have you talked to the Durametric guys? They might have an idea of a work-around for the mismatch in identity for the BCM.
The ABS/PSM - when the modules get soaked, it's often not only the module itself that are damaged. If the water sits there for any amount of time - the connector to the module is soaked and can be damaged. Examine that connector very carefully to see if there is any evident damage to the metal parts of it. The fact that it worked fine for a week or so makes me start thinking that way..
BTW - you're Wes? We have a forum where new members introduce themselves, and show us pretty pictures of their Porsches. It's pretty much a tradition here. You can find it at:

And Welcome to

I haven’t spoken with anyone with Durametric, yet. Not sure what to actually ask them, lol. I’m well versed with VW coding, but not so much with
Porsche
. With a VW, you can pull historical coding under a program called Guided Fault Finding, where it pulls all the coding from modules and stores it in the cloud. As long as the car has been at a dealer at some point and that’s ran, it’s retrievable. I think that’s my problem, maybe that Handover deal might do it, but I don’t see a spot in the Dura commands to do it, and I also have a
Foxwell NT710
that some say can as well, but I haven’t found it there either.
shrug
my apologies, I’ll go do an intro post. 👍🏼
Wes - on your
NT710
- if you haven't done it - update the software on the system (very easy to do with the built in Wifi). The latest
Porsche
software gives you (at least on my 2011
Cayenne
) -
PIWIS
level programming capabilities. WARNING: "With great power comes the ability to do great damage" - me. I've done it and had to get my
PIWIS-III
out to fix it. The
PIWIS
does have the "handover" function. The only warning with a handover - it erases all settings you've made to the car. On a
Boxster
that's probably not so much to worry about. On the
Cayenne
it took me another 45 minutes or so to reset all my customization of the car.
Looking forward to your intro posting.
Yea, I’ve already fooled with the
Foxwell
and coding enough to make the top stop working once… little gun shy about trying it again, haha.
I think the safe way to use it - before opening the programming part of a device - use the backup the device. Then, if the world turns to fudge, you can restore it to what it was before you started. At least that's my theory..
