Basically it replaces the crappy plastic innards of the existing shifter with machined aluminium parts / heavy duty ball bearings.

A really positive feel to the gear change, slightly shorter throw makes a world of improvement and overall the gear change feels much more in line with the overall feel of the car.

Coverage and how to read this overview

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

2 eligible posts · 0 unverified posts · 1 discussions match the subject in their title or opening post.

0 evidence records excluded for query context · 0 excluded by outcome qualification · 0 adjusted by outcome qualification.

0 acknowledgements have no verified action link; they do not establish a repair result.

POST 1 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Hi, I know this isn't the forum for GTs but I've got a 996.2 GT3 which I bought earlier in the year. Love everything about it, except for the feel of the gear shifter which just felt a bit limp and wobbly in comparison to the rest of the car. I looked at a lot of alternatives out there and decided to go with the Function First Shift-Right kit. Basically it replaces the crappy plastic innards of the existing shifter with machined aluminium parts / heavy duty ball bearings. I also managed to pick up a cheap second hand shifter box from a 997.2 which has a slightly shorter throw than the 996. It took a while for the parts to come from the US, but including import duties (grr) and the 'new' shifter box it all came to a bit under £500. Fitting was super straightforward with lots of instruction on YouTube for removing the centre handbrake panels etc (made easier because I have the centre console delete I think). Took maybe 90 mins to take the old one out and put the new one in. Difference is night and day. A really positive feel to the gear change, slightly shorter throw makes a world of improvement and overall the gear change feels much more in line with the overall feel of the car. For anyone bugged by the same issue and looking for solutions I thought I would just chuck this view into the mix 👍🏻
