Explicit resolution reports before identified causes, performed actions and suggestions. Within each level, matching component labels precede direct query mentions and inherited thread context; successful versus unsuccessful discussion counts, owner confirmations and independent discussion support determine order. This is not a probability of success.

So firstly, check for leaks, then listen for any odd noises, check the radiators are receiving hot water (use an infra red thermometer on the flow and return pipes and on the radiators themselves and finally vaccum bleed your cooling system.
Leading evidence: 'Check leaks' (no explicit attributable resolution; this is a reported action or suggestion). Across 1 matching discussions, The most frequently discussed action is 'Check leaks' (1 discussions). For that action, 0 discussions report a resolution and 0 report an unsuccessful attempt. No action has an explicit, attributable resolution report under the current rules. These are forum reports and suggestions, not a confirmed diagnosis.

These are separate views of the same evidence. Frequency alone does not establish a fix, and these counts must not be added together.

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

Hi all,
Grateful for some advice. My 996 runs hot I feel. The fans work on low and high speed. I know it's hot at the moment but these cars run in hot climates elsewhere. When driving in a mixture of decent speeds (i.e >50mph) and some stop start the temp just generally climbs regularly reaching 104 degrees and over the past week 107-108. I take it that;s not normal?
What should I be doing? Cleaning out radiators or more extensive investigation of the cooling system.
The thing that surprises me is that, for instance today, I was on motorway doing motorway speeds and the temp was still climbing. I accept the temp will go up in stop start traffic but surely at 70ish mph there should be good enough airflow to provide cooling?
Btw, I have been using the readout on the HVAC unit to monitor.
Thanks,
Miles
If the a/c is on the fans turn on automatically.
Clearing the rads should be done annually or more frequently, a good thing to do. Temp should drop to 80 on the gauge (90+ in real life) once on the move.
In the recent hot weather the temp reading in my car has remained normal.
Therefore it might be that you do have a problem, but you do not mention boiling up.
If you already know how a cooling system works, miss this bit out. A cooling system works by pressurising so that the boiling point of water is higher. EG a radiator cap of say 15psi means the water in the radiator will boil at 125deg Centigrade thus improving the cooling effect of air passing through the radiator fins.
If the system has a leak or a faulty rad cap, the system will not pressurise and will boil up (messy and smelly).
As yours has not boiled up the next easiest place to look is the water pump. Obviously the pump is there to circulate the water in the cooling system. Is it doing this? are there any odd noises comming from the pump? Is there any sign of dampness (a leak).
The destination of the circulated water is controlled by the thermostat. When cold it is closed, when open it allows water to circulate to the radiators and back. If the thermostat only part opens then it will restrict that flow. A faulty thermostat usually fails in the open position and there are holes which allow a trickle of water to bypass the thermostat in all conditions.
Finally, do you have an airlock. The first thing i learned about my 996 was the only way to refill a cooling system is to vaccum bleed. If you have an air lock the cooling system will not pressurise and either the engine will run hot and or it will boil over.
So firstly, check for leaks, then listen for any odd noises, check the radiators are receiving hot water (use an infra red thermometer on the flow and return pipes and on the radiators themselves and finally vaccum bleed your cooling system. Checking the header tank or lifting the air bleeder is not sufficient.
Or don't drive when it is that hot
An independent Porsche specialist I spoke to recommended fitting a cool running thermostat. They are quite cheap. We'll be fitting one soon.
