I used an inexpensive Skar Audio EVL-65 D4 subwoofer. I chose D4 because the subwoofer channel of my 5 channel D'Amore Engineering E600.5 amplifier is 2 ohm stable. Two 4 ohm voice coils wired in parallel present the perfect 2 ohm load on the amplifier.
The enclosure is the standard
Bose subwoofer
enclosure that lives in the passenger side (for left hand drive cars) footwell of the 987
Cayman
and 997
911
Cabriolet. I think it's the same box as a 996 Cab as well, but don't quote me on that.
First thing to do is remove the 4x6"
Bose
speaker and
Bose amplifier
from the box. I didn't take a picture of that, because it's pretty self explanatory. Remove screws, remove speaker, remove amp.
The you're going to want to use a jigsaw and CAREFULLY cut a hole for the new speaker into your box. Use the cardboard template that comes with the speaker when you order it. You will also want to coat as much of the box as you can with
Dynamat
type stuff to kill any vibrations. It's flimsy plastic, so you want to reinforce it as much as you can. I also stuffed the box with polyfill.
Drop the new speaker into place, and fasten it down. I used #6 self tapping machine screws 1.5" long, and they worked pretty good.
Next you are going to need to cover the old Bose speaker hole. I used 1/4" ABS plastic cut out using the Bose speaker as a template. I placed weatherstripping aroung the perimeter and then fastened it into place using the original screws going into their original holes.
Finally reinstalled the port. Only one of the original screws will work, so I just used a 1" longer screw for the other side. Fastened right in!
Install it, and you're done!
I originally had this box in my 911, but then I moved it to my wife's Cayman. I simply recovered the box in tan carpet. Because the speaker is in the footwell, you're going to want to put a grille over it. I used a Recoil SG-65P grille from Amazon. The non-Bose floormats are also different from the Bose stereo floormats because of the subwoofer. I bought some Weathertechs, and carefully trimmed out for the speaker with a razor knife.
And here it is playing! This is when it was in my 997 on the D'Amore E600.5
Well done,
@theblooms
- Nice job!
I'm an audio nerd. I can't leave any stereo I've ever had alone.
Sir, how do you remove the stock Bose Subwoofer housing in the Passenger footwell of the 987 Cayman? Were are the fasteners located? I want to install the ******** iPhone mount which requires temporary removal of the subwoofer. Thanks!
It's a piece of cake, just two screws.
There's a little grille that looks like an upside-down Batman symbol. Pop that out.
Underneath there is a fastener, I think it's a T-20. Remove that.
Now remove the vent and associated lighter socket.
Behind that vent you'll see another fastener, this one is a T30, and that I'm sure of.
Now pull the box out, there's a single wiring harness that you need to unclip.
Awesome, thanks so much, I figured it was probably under the subwoofer vent looking thing. Now to pull out the little plastic grill without breaking it.
thanks again!
