Explicit resolution reports before identified causes, performed actions and suggestions. Within each level, matching component labels precede direct query mentions and inherited thread context; successful versus unsuccessful discussion counts, owner confirmations and independent discussion support determine order. This is not a probability of success.

Coverage and how to read this overview
Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.
12 eligible posts · 0 unverified posts · 1 discussions match the subject in their title or opening post.

I'm driving along rather spirited, and need to slow quickly. So I apply the brakes pretty firm then when I let off the brakes I get a definite thunk noise from the back.
Guessing the noise is suspension or brake caliper area but of course hard to pin down.
Thoughts on where to look first? I can't recreate it unless I press on the brakes pretty firm and then let off.
I'm more inclined to think that you have a motor mount that needs attention. There's not really a lot in the caliper area to "thunk" if things are bolted down as intended...
My guess would be the front motor mount is getting loaded up when you're standing on the brakes, and the clunk comes when you get off the pedal.
Wouldn't a wheel bearing cause a whine at speed? or under cornering? That's been my experience with other wheel bearing problems on other cars. I jacked up the left side, and wiggled the wheel some without any noticeable movement.
I'll order the motor mounts, I've heard it's not a bad job to replace them.
Aha! From the Pelican trans mount tech article exactly: "One sign of this failure is a knocking noise under hard acceleration and braking."
Also having a modest amount of trouble selecting 3 and 5 gears. Parts on the way and I have a sawzall.
I was thinking it was your tranny mount. I have changed mine on my old 996. Two things you need to do is remove the transmission and use a press to install the new mount. When taking the old one out make sure to be careful of the alum case and when putting the new mount back make sure to mark top center on the case and mount. It will help with the placement because once it's in it is really in.
I'm going to look at an alternate method for installing the mount in the trans that doesn't include trans removal. I have some ideas and have done some work similar to this in the past with good results. I'll see what I can come up with and share in a different thread if it works well.
I just installed Function First's 60A transmission mount. It's the softest one they make. So far it has eliminated a lot of the shifting issues I had, doc. You might check it out.
Btw, Rein previously had a pretty great price on their OEM motor mounts via Amazon.
