Coverage and how to read this overview

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

6 eligible posts · 0 unverified posts · 1 discussions match the subject in their title or opening post.

0 acknowledgements have no verified action link; they do not establish a repair result.

POST 2Original post

I have a 1999 996 and am hearing the rattle on cold start. I have read that it could be the tensioners. I've seen threads on IMS and Camshaft upgrading but haven't seen any threads that address just the chain tensioners (3). Is it possible to just swap out the 3 tensioners? I'm assuming I'll need to drain the oil but am wondering if this can be done without the special cam shaft locking tool? Thanks, Mark

You do not need to drain the oil, but you will loose some oil out of each tensioner, so be prepared to top up. It is never a good idea to pull the tensioner unless the engine is locked at TDC and cam locks are used.

POST 4Original post

Just one more question to clarify. If I lock the crankshaft at TDC can I replace the tensioners 1 at a time without the camshaft locking tool without issue?
