Lots of threads on swaps and lots of threads on horn issues with swaps. I just purchased a ZZZ 7.2 with the 840 option SD wheel with paddles and the horn does not function. Horns work.
PIWIS
says horn not actuated when I test inputs with the button pushed. There was a thread a while back that mentioned the "horn switch" is behind a plastic flap in the plastic air bag sleeve just below the right wheel spoke. There is what I think is a hall effect sensor behind the flap with a label 40E. In the same location on the air bag can there is a magnet embedded. I hooked up test voltage and placed a magnet near the sensor and no voltage was present on pins 1-2. I cannot get the transistor/sensor out without taking the wheel apart. I don't want to just start prying on spokes and paddle covers to take it apart and wreck or scratch the thing.
Has anyone had one of these or any other wheel with the same air bag can appart? Does anyone know if I am correct in how the horn functions?
Hi - there is a thread I think you might want to read..
https://www.planet-9.com/threads/before-posting-a-technical-question-read-this.253613/
I'm completely at a loss for what "a ZZZ 7.2 with the 840 option SD wheel with paddles" is.. that's not a Porsche PN, so I assume it must be aftermarket?
Better questions get better answers.
We're not like Facebook where you'd throw this out, you'd get about 10 wiseass answers, one or two people with what they think are helpful answers - but aren't, and not a lot of real help. And then your posting will disappear overnight never to be found again. FB sucks.
Looking forward to some clarification.
I did a steering wheel swap from Rennmeister, and never had any issues at all. Horn works, SRS is happy, and no coding needed.
Hi, sorry for the confusion with my crazy shorthand and thanks for the feedback.
ZZZ is the in indication in the VIN that the
Porsche
is a ROW, rest of world model not for USA/Canada. Probably not relevant but I thought to include it incase.
7.2 I have seen people use for
997.2
/
987.2
interchangeability, this issue affects both models.
840 is the option code for the Sport Design Steering wheel on my car, part number: 997.347.803.81 A34.
The car came with this wheel from the factory, but I purchased it with a non functioning horn. SInce my post I have found that the horn activation circuit board that piggybacks on right paddle circuit board is bad. The boards have no
Porsche
part numbers and the numbers on them don't seem to be available on a web search. The horn switch board is a hall effect sensor triggered by the magnet in the air bag can, which sends ground to pin 2 in the steering column harness when the button/airbag is pushed.
I have given up trying to fix it and I ended up ordering a
981
/991 Sport Design Wheel which appears to be identical but has a different part number: 991.044.400.01 A34
Some knowledge to pass on to support the community if others are searching for info on this. The wheel electronics are extremely fragile, especially the 4 pin piggyback jumper that fell apart in my hands. The plastic nubs on the board covers that small screws fit into tend to break during reassembly. Don't over heat the wheel when popping off the chrome 3 spoke cover. Be careful when prying up the cover not to damage the plastic board covers under the right a left spokes.
I did find a good video on disassembly of the wheel
here
, but nothing on the boards.

I recently upgraded my Sport steering wheel on my 2009 987.2 Cayman to a Sport Design wheel from a 981 Boxster. I was elated that no airbag codes appeared when I started the car, then later realized that the horn did not work. The solution was to use my Foxwell NT510 scan tool to recode the wheel as a multi-function wheel despite the fact that is was not an MF wheel. Hope that helps. BTW I could not do this with my Durametric Enthusiast tool.
Right, my car came with this wheel so MF was already on. I tried turning it off and on again before I took the wheel apart but no luck. thanks
A quick update to my horn issue. I purchased a new 991 Sport Design steering wheel from a seller on
AliExpress
. It is brand new and works perfectly including the horn. Worked out to about $800 US delivered in just over a week.
