Don’t worry, I didn’t do this, but sometime in the future I’m considering my
next
pdk
fluid service interval, the first time being done by me.
What happens if you accidentally put too much in there (say… 0.25L)? What about too little?
The
pdk
is my biggest focus on keeping healthy, so just trying to get a sense of failure modes and sensitivity to them.
Thanks!
If you are just doing a drain and fill. Then do it cold and with the car level. Measure what was taken out and put back in the exact amount. Run car for a week or so and then when it’s cold and level open fill plug and see if it runs out. You should be good to go.
Great advice from Ernest.. but I believe the actual fill level is higher than the fill plug (assuming this is the clutch and control circuit oil) - so checking it later when cold probably isn't a great idea. What is a great idea is putting back the same amount you took out.
If you're doing the gear-oil side (called for at 120,000 miles) - then I believe cold fill to the bottom of the fill threads will be just fine. The gear section is very similar in mechanical design used (bearings, gears, sliding shafts) to a manual transmission..
On my
981
PDK
I was able to put back in cold exactly what came out and it just started to come out the fill plug. I added a little bit more and closed her up. Checked it a week later cold by opening the fill plug and a small amount came out. Closed her up from there. So far so good. At 30k fluid looked good, if looks even matter.
Well, this question came out of a general query of fault tolerance to the procedure (there is no such thing as “exact”), but also from a combination of one “issue” and one investigation (possibly related).
a while back I posted about the first couple of shifts while cold revving a few hundred rpm higher between shifts, and I have oil mist under the diamond plate I’m going to be poking around, removing parts, and cleaning up.
So that got me wondering if there was a vent hole or something and if there was any potential correlation between losing a very little bit of fluid from the
PDK
and the shifting behavior while cold.
IF that’s the case (and currently a very big if), how sensitive is it to topping off since I wouldn’t have a known good amount to match.
again - all this is super speculation and thus the admittedly pretty vague question.
I believe you are correct. I remember reading about an aftermarket catch can kit for the oil. Some people experience this when tracking and the
PDK
gets hot and the oil expands.

this is interesting and could be consistent with my track day quote a few months ago. While fuzzy on the memory, the timing doesn’t seem too out of line with my day at Laguna Seca.
