Explicit resolution reports before identified causes, performed actions and suggestions. Within each level, matching component labels precede direct query mentions and inherited thread context; successful versus unsuccessful discussion counts, owner confirmations and independent discussion support determine order. This is not a probability of success.

Suggestion

If the alternator cannot provide a healthy voltage, it's fairly easy to change the brushes & bearings which is where the problem lies.

I think you could use the big +ve (jump lead) connection in the engine compartment to give you an idea of the alternator voltage.

Coverage and how to read this overview

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

POST 1 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

2003 Turbo suffering from the usual poor winter starting I have a plug in charger but I thought to check the voltage whilst running. I'm only getting 12.8volts at the battery and the dash display confirms this, however, I've noticed sometimes the dash display show near 14volts which I think is more likely. the car is fitted with a silver top BOSCH battery, what should I start checking? James

POST 2Original post

Check the voltage output directly from the alternator. This will eliminate any dodgy earths from the picture. If you see a steady 13.8V+, you can start looking further along for earthing / corroded connection problems. If you get all the way to the battery without find a fault, you could have a failing cell on the battery. If you have a local garage with a battery load tester get them to confirm battery health. If the alternator cannot provide a healthy voltage, it's fairly easy to change the brushes & bearings which is where the problem lies. A refurb alternator is ~£400 and a new one is way more than that. Cost of replacement parts is < £100!

POST 3Original post

How do you check the voltage from the dash then?

POST 5Original post

I think you could use the big +ve (jump lead) connection in the engine compartment to give you an idea of the alternator voltage. IIRC, the alternator output connects directly to it.

POST 6Original post

Err yes, fair point! I'd overlooked the obvious and was thinking about the OBC.
