Explicit resolution reports before identified causes, performed actions and suggestions. Within each level, matching component labels precede direct query mentions and inherited thread context; successful versus unsuccessful discussion counts, owner confirmations and independent discussion support determine order. This is not a probability of success.

0 original-poster resolution reports. Counts can overlap; they are not unique people or a success rate.
0 discussions have direct query context; 0 report a fix in that context. Other evidence may inherit the discussion’s subject.
Leading evidence: 'easiest bit of the job' (no explicit attributable resolution; this is a reported action or suggestion). Across 1 matching discussions, the most frequently mentioned possible cause is 'easiest bit of the job' (1 discussions; 0 report identifying it and 1 suggest it). The most frequently discussed action is 'Replace situation' (1 discussions). For that action, 0 discussions report a resolution and 0 report an unsuccessful attempt. No action has an explicit, attributable resolution report under the current rules. These are forum reports and suggestions, not a confirmed diagnosis.

A pressure washer did little to change the situation but an afternoon with a non stick scourer at least allowed me to see what I had.

Ok to move onto one of the last steps, to reseal the 3 piece alloys.

After some testing, working on the badly marred bit was easier than I anticipated.

I'm not really into the polished rims look and I'm too lazy/use the car too much to keep them polished.

After multiple soakings of the fixings in penetrating oil for many hours all 160 bolts came apart pretty easy using a long breaker bar with gentle steady pressure.
Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

I've been umming and aahing about buying hollow spoke turbo twists for my C4S but sets local to me in NZ were pretty dear.
Whilst I was keeping an eye out on 'Trade Me', the closest thing to eBay in NZ, some wheels for a 996TT appeared. They were just labeled as aftermarket in fairly good condition. 18x8JET45 18x11jET38
A helpful guy in the comments suggested there were Kinesis K18s, a quick google led to limited pics, especially on a 996. I did find pics on a 993which looked great and I decided on a punt.
Poetic Licence of 'fairly good condition'
I wasn't expected them to be perfect, plan in my head was a good clean up, new tyres and bob's your uncle.
In the pics the condition of the wheels seemed good but when they turned up I was seriously questioning my purchase. I didn't take any pics at first, probably because they were so far from what I thought. They were quite badly kerbed/marked with obvious corrosion on the fasteners.hey were caked in tar, covered in braked dust, lots of very sticky residue from previous wheels weights etc
I realised that they were going to take a lot more than I anticipated. A pressure washer did little to change the situation but an afternoon with a non stick scourer at least allowed me to see what I had. The insides of the barrels were pitted ands scratched, Scuffing to the wheel faces but no signs of serious damage.
A bit of a polish and they're looking ok at 10 feet but failing inspection from much closer. I put in grey centres I want to use and confirmed they could look great. Enough for me to decide they warrant a lot more effort.
Taking lots of encouragement from HMG66 thread.

With a few hours watching 3 piece wheel restoration videos on Youtube and I decided it was time to go further. Plan is to adopt the how hard can it be philosophy doing most of the stuff myself. I will be sending out for the anodising etc.
After multiple soakings of the fixings in penetrating oil for many hours all 160 bolts came apart pretty easy using a long breaker bar with gentle steady pressure. They actually had a lot more corrosion all the way along them than what was visible from the top.
Removing the wheel centres also exposed the kind of corrosion and staining that was present across the barrels that I failed to photograph earlier.
Glad you found my thread. Bravo for having a go at them yourself.
They suit the car well ..good find.
I would keep your standard wheels for winter as polished lips need a certain amount of ongoing TLC..
Thanks, I think they are going to be good. I will keep the standard wheels. Of note winter here in Northern NZ is pretty mild, not often below 10C and they don't use salt on the roads. However it does rain,,,,,a lot.
After some testing, working on the badly marred bit was easier than I anticipated. Starting with wet 80grit emery cloth but not aiming to be perfect the edges cleaned up quickly.
The bolts are looking pretty good, after a week of soaking, rinsed and dried in a warm oven.
I've contacted a couple of local anodising firms.
I'm looking a tint anodising the faces, 'bright dipping' the lips and AliHaze finishing the barrels. I'm really interested if anyone has experience/expertise in anodising and thoughts on my plans.
Wow!
I can't believe it was last August.
Once life got in the way, again.
I started a new role.
I caught the C-19 lurgy, which despite not getting that ill, sucked all of the life out of me.
Christmas came, then I bought a car,
My mum came to visit(for 2 months),
I sold a car,
I bought another car,
The wife's patience ran out and she was fed up of tripping over these wheels in the house.
Despite trying to do these wheels justice myself I realised that I was going to struggle to find the time. Hence they went off to the local metal polishers.
Manukau Metal Polishers- they have done a great job in less than a week....:coat:
Back to the anodisers now.
Generally this very protracted project is finally coming together.
After much thought I decided to change it up a bit. I'm not really into the polished rims look and I'm too lazy/use the car too much to keep them polished.
I had the barrels and the rims natural anodised.
Nearly there, my local tyre shop span up the wheels to make sure I had done a good enough job.
Ok to move onto one of the last steps, to reseal the 3 piece alloys. Using JB Weld Ultimate Silicon sealer my 12yr old gave me a hand. It was easier than I expected using masking tape, the biggest issue was not making a mess everywhere.
I'm sure they won't be to everyones taste but I'm happy with how they have come out.
This week the new valves are due in and I'll get some tyres mounted. Hopefully by the end of the week they will be on the car.
