I know I'm posting a lot of questions, but something came up while reading another site that I found interesting. It was on a boxter/Cayman site and there were lots of posts about the Boxters engine going boom! Something about a rear main seal <RMS> going out? Someone said 1 in 5 engines will fail sooner rather then later. Considering that the Cayman S and Boxter S now you use the same engine, have you guys seen an issue with this on the Caymans? Thanks!
No you need to read a little deeper, they are talking about the old 2.5L Boxster engines from 97-99 and even among those it was only certain ones. While the RMS problem plagued a lot of 986 Boxsters, very few 987s have had this problem due to a redesign. (FWIW it also hit some 996/997's too).
In a nutshell, nothing to worry about really, your odds of hitting an elk are probably higher...
lol ok thanks! I saw your pictures and actually called my wife over to see them. Her first words were..."Jesh that poor deer!" I said forget the deer, look at that beautiful car!
Yes, but..
Yes, BUT no different from a 997. No reason to think that the engine will spontaneously explode.
The new engine design that includes the 997 does have the flywheel further out past the main bearing and therefore more susceptible to vibration.
I just lost my RMS, 2800 miles. This was after losing my Clutch slave cylinder, then finding that the pressure plate was loose. So got a new pressure plate, clutch and bearing. I suspect that the vibration from the loose pressure plate damaged the RMS.
But I also have a friend that has lost 2 RMS in his 996 C4S. Porsche replaced the engine for free. Its a part so it can fail.
Here's a thread that you should take a look at. It gives some perspective on the engine reliability.

chows4us posted this in the other thread but I just read it. It sums up the way I feel about Porsche reliability.

I’ve always had this fantasy – “If I could afford any super car/exotic car that I wanted what would I get?” Ferrari? Lamborgini? Aston Martin? None of those. I always come back to a Porsche because of its reliability. (I know. I know. The fantasy breaks down because if you could afford any super car/exotic car why would you worry about reliability?) But think for a minute. We are driving a pretty exclusive car that is a reliable car. We drive cars that are beautiful . . . cars that handle . . and we don’t have to worry about them. (I know we
do
worry about our cars but we don’t
have
to.) That says something about Porsche.
Do Porsches break? Of course they do. But I can always find a Porsche dealership that is not too far away. They fix it. I would be out of luck if I had a broken Lamborgini.
So Porsche engine reliability is one thing that I am not going to worry about!
Now if I could just get that "clunk" taken care of.
