POST 1 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Hi there, I went through a couple searches and found a couple threads regarding the dealer unable to program new keys. My problem is I have two new key heads for my vehicle. One was able to take and I have the keyless lock/unlock function again. The second brand new key head had three attempts at programming by the dealer but did not take. Is there something wrong with the key, alarm module, or techs competency? Again, one of the key fobs did take and functioning properly. My car is a 2000 996 so I only have unlock/lock and no frunk option. Thank you in advance for anyone that can help.

POST 2Original post

What did the Dealer Tech tell you? That is was probably a bad key? That's what I would have said given there was no issue with the first one..

POST 3 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Quotes source post: 18255806

Tech said it was a bad key and mentioned it could be the alarm module as well. I doubt its the module since the first key was programmable. The service advisor told me theres more slots available to program keys. I asked if every other key on the history was wiped clean prior to programming the two new keys and he said yes. Im baffled because I dont know if I can return or exchange the key with suncoast.

POST 4Original post

Yea, I don't know either, you just need to call them and see. They get weird sometimes over keys/electronics/electrical stuff .. It's no problem when it stay s"in-house" , the Tech just goes to the Parts Dept and gets another one...

POST 5 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Quotes source post: 18255878

Well I emailed Suncoast who is an authorized Porsche dealer in Sarasota Florida and they said all Porsche parts have a two year warranty and I can get it replaced at any dealership. Fast forward, I go to my local dealership West Houston Porsche and they will not replace the key since it wasnt bought there. I elevated to Porsche North America who I asked if I bought a part from an authorized dealer. Does it void my warranty at any Porsche dealership for replacement? I actually got one of the keys programmed at one of Momentums Porsche sister location in River Oaks. Has anyone had problems with getting a dealership to honor the warranty on an oem part not purchased through them but another authorized dealer? This seems ludicrous that an oem part from an authorized dealer is not warrantied.

POST 6Original post

So, what did PCNA say ? They are the authority here... So you bought it from an Authoized Porsche Dealer, and had a different Authorized Porsche Dealer try to program. ( Suncoast and Momentum). Momentum doesn't want to warranty it because they didn't sell it to you.. Suncoast doesn't want to warranty it because they have to get reimbursed by PCNA for the warranty claim, and Dealers get warranty claims denied all the time..so they get picky. ( and can't be forced to loose money) I have seen this kind of stuff many many times...... PCNA has to make the decision here because they are the ones who will ultimately have to pay for it...

POST 7Original post

When I bought a new key for my car, I bought the actual key from https://www.keysinthepost.com/ , all they needed was a picture of it as I recall. Then I bought the fob off ebay with that long number attached to it and brought it to the dealer for programming. Not this will help you, but just another way to get a key for somebody who is reading this. The keys from keysinthepost were stupid cheap. I bought two of them.

POST 8Original post

Wow so I suppose there is something to that $750 dealer key.

POST 9Original post

Quotes source post: 18262847

I bought 2 key blades from keysinthepost. Both work flawlessly. One is my shop key for my car. It is used when I want the ignition on, but I dont want the car to start. I.e. engine oil is drained/draining and I want to roll down windows, or get mileage for my records. The other is just the blade and is kept in my wallet in case I lock myself out of the car.

POST 10Original post

What was the final resolution to this? Im having a similar issue.

POST 11Original post

The problem might be this - from the factory three keys are provided that are input to the immobilizer. Two regular ignition keys and one valet key (which does work to start the car). BUT, the immobilizer only has five key slots that can be programmed. It could be that all available immobilizer key slots have been programmed, so even with a "new" key and key code, there may not be anymore immobilizer key slots open, and then you cannot program another key into the system.

POST 12Original post

Quotes source post: 19705780

IMHO, dude probably doesn't care, he sold the car like 9 months after this thread. https://rennlist.com/forums/market/1345368#post18760601 Rule of thumb, purchase and program the keys at your local Porsche dealership. Trying to save a few bucks buying online could have unforeseen negative consequences when it comes to refunds and/or warranty replacement.

POST 13Original post

Cloning the immobilizer chip in the working key is easier than coding a new one to the car. Cloners can be had from Aliexpress cheap enough and with a few blank superchips you can make as many as you want. Couple this with some fresh cut blanks from keysinthepost and its not a hard thing to do!

POST 14Original post

Quotes source post: 19708059

If that were true, then it would have already happened after 25+ years. The rolling code Porsche/Delphi alarm/immobilizer system is pretty robust and near impossible to beat.

POST 15Original post

Quotes source post: 19708185

If you cared to understand the system, you would realise the chip in the key is different to the rolling code in the fob! You can clone the key chip easily but not the fob. Perfect for a spare key that actually starts the car. Most older immobilisers can be hacked and you are a bit clueless if you think otherwise sorry.

POST 16Original post

Quotes source posts: 19708204, 19708204, 19708204

Woah, sparky! Come down off that high horse, Slim Jim. Come again??? Last time I checked the Megamos Crypto RFID transponder is programed with the rolling code that is verified by the Delphi immobilizer. It's located in the keyfob! The RFID device/laser cut blade are only needed for starting the car. The separate electronic board (transmitter) inside the FOB (NOT associate with the RFID) is also programmed and matched to the immobilizer and is solely for access to the inside of the car and frunk/deck lid. Many people have dead electronic boards, but can still start the car using the blade and RFID. And, I'm clueless? To program a new key to these cars you need iPAS codes and a PIWIS.....Yep! the top secret code... woooooooo. Try getting them sparky! A lot of bright computer science majors-programmers-electronic-hacker elites have tried to copy the code and make clones, even posted their progress here on RL, but they quickly found it was a BRIDGE to NOWHERE. But hey, since you say it's soooooo easy, why don't you give it a whirl cowboy? I agree with you there. Any electronic system can be copied and/or "hacked" these days. Hell, China was built on this principle of reverse engineering. But you have to find were it's vulnerable, a back door so to speak. However, like a lot of bright computer hackers that have tried on the Porsche system, do YOU have the patience to figure out the algorithm in a rolling code? We're not talking Rubic's Cube here, Slim. Many people have successfully read out the code on the chips in the immobilizer, but couldn't do anything with it. It's easy to sit back and say, "Hell, this is nothing more than a garage door opener, it can be easily copied!" NOT!!!! Again, if it was easy, then you'd have tons of generic fobs for sale on Amazon by now, but you don't! I recently cloned my father's Ford Keyfob and even programmed a new key to his Truck. But we're talking cheap-*** Fords, not Porsches. Easy to do a Ford fob, but NOT these cars. I've had lots of discussion on the subject over the years, even talked to Porsche of Atlanta as well as read up on the process in the factory service manual. All the dealer techs are trained to follow the step-by-step program sequence with their PIWIS and Porsche network access in the factory manual. I guess if you want to find a quick way of making this work, you're gonna have to get on a plane to the motherland, go spy level and locate and bribe the sole programmer that created these systems. Good luck finding that person. They're probably hidden right next to the Coca Cola recipe! Cheers. And, good luck with Porsche keyfob clone!

POST 17Original post

I have this problem on my 986.1 Boxster S. Two keys - both from the dealer and programmed there. One will suddenly stop working, then start working again randomly. This year, it quit entirely. I'm not sure what to do on this. Having the convenience of two keys is nice, but I'm scared both will stop working.

POST 18Original post

Quotes source post: 19708353

Clarify. Not working like NOT being able to unlock the car's doors OR not being able to start the Boxster? When did you have the keys made?

POST 19Original post

Quotes source post: 19708324

I'm not talking keyfob clone! I'm talking RFID Megamos clones, on an xhorse superchip Its possible, people are having success with it. Mine works, so all good here

POST 20Original post

If you have 1 working/programmed "pill" ( RFID Megamos Cripto chip) you can have as many spare keys as you want for $20 each with this hack I came up with.( but not remote controls) With this hack I have many spare keys to start the car with any Laser cut HAA key blade, even have some "switch blade" type spare keys... https://rennlist.com/forums/996-foru...?highlight=key Like said to have a working remote you will need the IPAS codes and they are keep tight to the vest by Porsche, you will need to be very close to someone with access to Porsche Partner Network to get that to program the remotes plus a new remote with the 10 digit code specific to the remote + PIWIS Tool..

POST 21Original post

Quotes source post: 19708367

I can physically lock, unlock, and start the car. If I unlock the car physically from the door handle, I need to insert the key into the ignition and at least put it into accessory, and/or start the car, or else the alarm system will freak out. The alarm / central locking system light stays on. With that mean I cannot use the remote controls to lock/unlock the car, or open the front and rear trunk with this remote. This key was programmed by the Porsche dealer back in 2017. As mentioned in my previous post, this would happen on and off, and more frequently in the past year or two, and now, that one single key is dead. I've changed the battery and all. Nothing.

POST 22Original post

Quotes source post: 19708548

This is classic Porsche keyfob failure for the 996/986 fobs. As mentioned before, the keyfob have three main parts: 1. laser cut blade 2. RFID 3. electronic board - transmitter #1 and #2 are responsible for verification to START the car. #3 is solely responsible for REMOTE access to the car's interior, frunk, and rear deck lid. #3 is usually want goes bad on these keyfobs. I have two right now that will start the car, but will NOT remotely open the doors of the car. I had the same problem with all my 996 cars as well as my '08 Cayman. Unfortunately, you fob is out of warranty. Try resyncing the keyfob. The procedure is noted in the service manual or search here on Rennlist. If that doesn't work, then would recommend going to the dealership and see if they can reprogram the remote transmitter inside the fob. Report back!

POST 23Original post

Quotes source post: 19708406

Look, if you've successfully cloned a RFID transponder pill inside a Porsche 996 keyfob, then please share the process and equipment. Rennlist is not a talent show. It's a community to share information and to help others. You'll have to forgive my apprehension. More than a decade on this forum and I have yet to see anyone succeed at this. Most of the time people are trying to access Porsche cars without any keys to clone. Again, a fool's errand. However, in theory cloning a RFID is definitely possible. Anyone can copy the laser cut portion now days since the blades and cutting technology are readily available, but since Porsche's RFID uses a separate code that is entered during the programming stage, it's my understanding that when attempting to replicate the RFID, you won't get the full code. I'm sure if someone creates a device that can not only replicate the primary code, but also the secondary "secret code", then it can happen. Again, please demonstrate how you copied the RFID.

POST 24Original post

I dug around and found a write-up by JMG Porsche on the re-sync procedure, if anyone is curious: The process to re-sync the remote key head is as follows. Put the key manually into the door lock (it does not matter if it is already locked or unlocked. Press the lock/unlock button and hold it in. Turn the key to the lock position and back to the middle position five times and return to the middle position one last time. Let go of the lock/unlock button. Press and hold in the lock/unlock button again. Turn the key to the unlock position and back the middle position five times and return the the middle position again. Let go of the lock/unlock button. Press the lock/unlock button in again and hold it in. Turn the key to the lock position and back to the middle position five times and return to the middle position again. Take the key out of the door lock and try the buttons. If the buttons now work, you have successfully re-synced your alarm system control unit and keys! Copied from JMG Porsche's website. POST 25Original post

Mines an early one, 1998 so has the simpler RFID chip ID13 type. ID48's on later cars apparently can be done, but i haven't done one. These systems are not a simple plug in and go, like a lot of these things. People can look them up themselves if they want to as im not going to write a long winded instruction on it. If you have the type of mind that likes messing with this stuff i'm sure you'll be able to work it out. Porschetech3's method is the best option for these but i'd want an additional immobilizer to keep the car safe, or at least some hidden switches somewhere.

POST 26Original post

Quotes source post: 19711332

What xHorse unit did you use? I assume you have to purchase blank RFID pill or will it erase and rewrite used ones? The xHorse unit that claims to clone Porsche keyfobs is rather expensive on their site: https://www.xhorsetool.com/wholesale...tool-plus.html https://www.aliexpress.us/item/32568...2usa4itemAdapt At over $2,000 most owners are just going to take their cars to the dealership or authorized locksmith that can make Porsche keys. When I cloned my father's F150, the unit was only $50. I bought 2 Ford transponder keys for less than $20. The remotes were also like 2 for $20 on Amazon. Had Ace hardware cut the blades for $8 each. The unit copied the factory original with no problem. The remotes can be programmed by the truck unlike Porsche remotes. Ford wanted $300 each to program new keys.

POST 27Original post

Quotes source post: 19711417

Again, its not cloning keyfobs. Its cloning the chip. Its not my machine, its a mates. Its not that one listed above, its a substantially cheaper version. Xhorse superchips are used, they can clone most types of RFID chips but there can be issues with ID48 on some cars as they require extra steps/ token to buy etc. I only wanted a working spare key, not worried about key fob.

POST 28Original post

Yep, the best way to "outsmart" the elaborate expensive Porsche Security System, is to redesign/revert it back to a Simple System like my hack .. And the best way to keep it safe from Thieves is to make it unique from all the other cars made just like it......... by using hidden switches that only YOU know they are there and where they are ... Sure a Great Thief could figure it out, but would take hours and hours and hours, and that's something Thieves can't afford...lol

Yes, I understand that you've been specifically referring to cloning the RFID chip, but that's not what this Chinese company is peddling. On their site and in their promos (see graphic below) they claim to not only clone the Porsche RFID (they refer to it as the "transponder"), but also the "remote" portion and laser cut blade of a Porsche key. The problem I have when companies out of China start pushing their products on the market via sites like Alibaba, they make WILD claims, but when you get the unit, it does NOT work as they claim. ((Surprise!!)) If you contact the seller, in many cases you won't get a response OR if they respond and say something like "they (i.e. the manufacturer) never claimed it would work for every Porsche model or trim level", yadda yadda yadda. Same thing happens with a lot of the Chinese companies that push scanners on Amazon, eBay, and Alibaba. They make BIG claims that their scanners will read all models on "ALL" Euro cars. I've been burned by this personally. That being said, I'm glad you have a friend to helped you clone a RFID with a xHorse unit, but given the cost of even the cheapest xHorse key programmer models, it's not practical for the owner. It would be just as cost effective and with less risk, to just go to an authorized locksmith or dealership and pay $400 - $500 for a brand new Porsche key/remote with a 2-year warranty. On the other hand, if there is a way to make a cloned Porsche RFID and laser cut blade for less than $100, then it might be worth the money. Yes I understand, you won't have "remote" capability, but at least you'd have a key they could access and start the car. Like I said before, I was able to make two Ford transponder keys with remotes for less than $100. That would be awesome if Porsche owners could do the same.
