This is not a constant reboot issue like many have had.
We were driving and listening to XM Radio, when the radio suddenly shut down, no audio, no display. Since this was at night, we noticed the buttons were still lit up, but flashing every 5 seconds or so. Tried all buttons, and noticed the status in the center gauge that usually shows a radio station or which XM channel had dashes.
Checked fuses, no burnt fuses. Tried putting the fuses back, hoping for a reboot. That didn't work. Tried to lock the car, wait and then unlock the car and check. Nope.
Battery check, it was actually low and wouldn't start the car. Ha! now we are on to something. Of course, I had been messing around with the radio, turning the car off and on but not starting it. Since it was an old battery, I just replaced it.
New battery - no change, radio still dead. Darn.
Maybe a bad connection on the back of the radio. No, all connections are good.
Noticed a whirring sound, like when a CD player is trying to read a disc. The flashing button lights I mentioned before flash at the same time that whirring sound happens. There is a CD inside (that I can't get out) so I thought that was the sound. But, I also found out there is a hard drive inside. I found a way to reset the radio on YouTube, and using the "Hold the Info Button for 10 seconds" there is a sound that sounds like a hard drive starting to spin up but then stops after a couple seconds. No display appears, nothing.
I think this one is toast. Time to start shopping for a replacement radio... with backup cam.
Unless someone can think of something I haven't tried.
Same thing happened in my Macan. Replaced. Would go with an aftermarket unit and then you can also get wireless
Carplay
. Put a
Kenwood
in the Cayman and a
Pioneer
in the Macan. Recommend the
Pioneer
.
Thanks for the recommendation. I found out that if I replace the head unit, I'll have to run my own wires to the speakers, as the
Bose system
is incompatible with normal radios. Now I'm thinking that I may install an amp. This is starting to snowball!
i just pulled a
PCM
3 out of an 07 Boxster. LMK if you're interested.
There is a converter which allows you to use the MOST output to the
Bose system
. Marked improvement in sound quality by changing out the headunit. Better would be to replace the
Bose amplifier
and head unit. I used the MOST converter for the Cayman and Macan and used the factory
Bose amplifier
.
You don't need to rewire your speakers if you swap amps. I started out the same way, swapping head unit and amp. I finally swapped out the old speakers as well. Sounds much better.
One thing to note. On the
Bose
systems, the tweeters are wired into the door mids so you will have to rewire the tweeters to get the crossovers.
Oh, I think I see what you mean. Locate the new amp where the old one was so the existing wiring to the speakers is used. I'll have to find where the amp is located, but I like the idea.
loss of feature access when pulling the pcm3.0 . from reviewing the owners manual there are a number of features which are set through the
pcm
. like the
sport chrono package
+ . how has everyone how has upgrade and lost the
pcm
, worked around this ?
My car doesn't have
Sport Chrono
+ and I haven't seen any other chassis features/settings that require the
PCM
3 to access. I will be seeing a "Radio Fault" and "Nav Fault" on the status if I go aftermarket, as I am seeing now.
Today I talked to Becker, hoping they might pinpoint the problem, they only said "$950 flat rate for repair".
I placed an order with Crutchfield today. It only hurts because I could have spent that cash on PS4S's.
