I thought you could put in 95 as well, but someone on this forum has said previously that you can't (maybe this is the TT or GT3?)....I'll have to check my filler cap tonight.

Yes I run the car on optimax or super + unleaded as I was advised by the previous owner to do so.

I generally avoid Shell Optimax as this gives the lowest mpg (even though it's Ferrari tested according to the ad!!!...shame it wasn't Porsche tested), with BP being the best of the high street brands.

These are separate views of the same evidence. Frequency alone does not establish a fix, and these counts must not be added together.

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

Hi Anyone who reads this!
I bought a maritime blue 53 Reg C4S in October and am very pleased with it. I've just got a couple of questions....
1. The car is fitted with a standard Porsche switchable sports exhaust. The car sounds great with the sports exhaust but does it actually make the car any quicker as I can't tell the difference?
2. I get between 21-22 mpg going to work and back (about a 26 mile round trip) and about 28 on a long run is this about right?
Obviously I didn't but the car to worry about fuel consumption but was just wondering if this is the norm as Porsche claim a bit better mpg.
Hi Mike, welcome, nice car
The sports exhaust doesn't give any performance advantage, just the beautiful noise. you may find your fuel efficiency drops though....as you hold higher revs for longer for the noise ;-)
I think your mpg is about right, obv depends on the type of driving, but your experience fits with mine.
Hi,
Congrats on the choice of 911
With the switchable sports exhaust stock there will be no performance gain. I have not noticed any variance on fuel consumption with it switched on or off.
With spirited driving getting late teens MPG and with sedate driving getting late twenties.
Just drove the A470 today took about 5 hours in pretty shocking rainy conditions, glad I was in my C4S felt planted and totally safe.
Enjoy your car and welcome.
Regards Alan
Maritime Blue Colour
It looks the same as all the other 996 C4S just blue
Let me get my cleaning cloth out at the weekend and I'll take a few and put them on!
I haven't seen any others in this colour on the road yet is there anyone else on here with the same colour?
Hi Mike,
MPGs sound about right to me too.. Although it's easy to drop down into the teens
...and boringly possible to get 30+
EDIT: BTW, I don't have PSE - shame on me
Like everyone else said, no performance gain from PSE, but of course, a good exhaust note is worth at least 100bhp!
Your MPG sounds right... do you use high-octane fuel e.g. Shell Optimax? I've found that's worth a couple of MPG as well as the performance benefit.
Maritime blue... most unusual, v nice. 8)
Yeah you can run the car on 95 Ron, it has some sort of knock sensors. But 98 Ron is the recomendation, I only put in 97 or higher.
Welcome btw, dead keen to see the pics of your car.
I thought you could put in 95 as well, but someone on this forum has said previously that you can't (maybe this is the TT or GT3?)....I'll have to check my filler cap tonight.
I've been doing a bit of experimenting and I find that the mpg return on 98 is considerably better than on 95 and when you consider mpg and the cost of 98 v 95, you also get a slightly better return....and much better performance.
I generally avoid Shell Optimax as this gives the lowest mpg (even though it's Ferrari tested according to the ad!!!...shame it wasn't Porsche tested), with BP being the best of the high street brands. The best by miles(!), are the supermarkets (as long as it's not contaminated), but I believe theirs are 99 RON, which would explain it and is cheaper than the main brands.
Only downside is that there's not a supermarket petrol station near me, so I have to quickly stop in on the occassion that I pass one.
I have also found that it takes about 4 empty and fill-ups before you really see the difference, but I suspect this is down to the knock sensor.
Hi GD,
Just to add my 2 penneth definately found Morrisons 99RON better than BP or Optimax in the MPG and feels more responsive, I know this is subjective but just my experience to date.
Alan.
Hi, if you like the noise but want a bit more go too? Check out the Porsche Shop website, Paul is doing a complete kit of Supersprint exhaust system for approx £1500 + VAT. I've got one fitted to my 996, with a REVO + Fab Speed Cold Air Intake. Transformed the car + 29 MPG on the longer run and an average of 25 around town.
Regards Big Bob
Hi Mike,
cool colour! 8)
Your 996 is designed (programmed) to run optimally on 98RON fuel. It will take 95 RON petrol, but the ECU knock sensors will retard timing on your engine to prevent pre-detonation. As a result, your engine will produce less power than standard and feel less responsive.
For the marginal cost of putting in the correct RON fuel to get the best performance, it's worth putting in the correct minimum ron petrol.
FWIW, I've found Shell to be the most inconsistent of all SULs on the forecourt... always best to fill up from a busy petrol station where the fuel is replenished frequently.
Cheers-
