Explicit resolution reports before identified causes, performed actions and suggestions. Within each level, matching component labels precede direct query mentions and inherited thread context; successful versus unsuccessful discussion counts, owner confirmations and independent discussion support determine order. This is not a probability of success.

Coverage and how to read this overview
Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.
6 eligible posts · 0 unverified posts · 1 discussions match the subject in their title or opening post.

(Id actually get it fixed before the trip, because I cant stand the thought of covering that much distance in anything, but the 996)
Hi,
My car is currently at the mech. getting all the arms / suspensions etc replaced. He noticed that I left a small (1 inch) drip where I parked it in his workshop at dropoff.
For the last 9 days it has been on a hoist (delays not of his making) and he notes that the engine has a small hanging drip of coolant on it. He's wiped it down and each morning there's a drip again. He says it is coming from the water pump. Nothing specific as he's not focused on that. So no idea if it is pump or gasket or perhaps from somewhere higher. Pump was replaced 2 years ago / 6,000km. No idea on thermostat as it isn't mentioned on the invoice.
My question for the more knowledgable community is - If it is dripping whilst the system has zero pressure then my thinking is that once it is under pressure / hot it is likely to leak VERY quickly? or could this be just a small leak that will do this for weeks/months/years? (I.ve got a Golf GTi and Audi A4 - they're constantly leaking...)
Anyhow... I sort of planned a1,000km country drive in the P-car this weekend.... or.... should I park it and not drive it until I can get the leaked fixed? (timing is the issue).
And on the pump I'll get the Porsche original with the composite impella and the 71 degree thermostat. Anything else?
I would park it if it were my car.

I assume youre in Australia, so youre likely experiencing rising temperatures right now. That sounds like a recipe for disaster when trying to take an extended drive with a coolant leak. Itd be fine if you were going across town or something, but this seems too risky for me.
And yes, the low temperature thermostat is a great upgrade to pursue at the same time. Id also check the condition of your hoses, too.
The piersburg pump is the oem so that will save u money. A leaking waterpump is not great for these cars so i would fix it rather then have an impeller come apart.
I know... I wanted a different answer to what I kinda knew.
The 1000km drive is a rally (Touring Road Event) that runs once a year. Oh well, I'll give the Golf GTI a stretch.
Since the pump sits below the water line it will always have coolant. So dripping should be expected if the seal is bad. It's not a hard job but takes some skill to do it w/o having to take too much off.
